GODAZA CALLS FOR PEACEFUL, ISSUE-BASED BY-ELECTIONS CAMPAIGNS

Press Release

23rd June 2025

Governance and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has urged political players to uphold peace and focus on issue-based campaigns as the country prepares for the upcoming by-elections in various constituencies and wards.

In a statement issued today, GODAZA Executive Director Elias Mulenga emphasized the need for political parties and candidates to prioritize development-oriented discussions and avoid divisive rhetoric or personal attacks.

“We expect campaigns to focus on issues that will benefit citizens, aligning with President Hakainde Hichilema’s calls for peace and national unity,” Mulenga stated.

Mulenga appealed to political parties, candidates, and voters to demonstrate maturity and respect for democratic principles by adhering to the Electoral Code of Conduct. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere throughout the campaign and on election day, in line with the President’s consistent advocacy for calm and order.

“By doing so, we can ensure that the by-elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner, truly reflecting the will of the Zambian people,” he added.

GODAZA also called on candidates and voters to reject violence and electoral malpractices, including corruption, which could undermine the credibility of the process.

The organization expressed optimism that a responsible and development-focused electoral process would contribute to Zambia’s progress and stability.

Media Statement
Date: 20th June 2025
Issued by: Obvious Mwaliteta, UPND Lusaka Province Chairman

*Subject: Diplomatic Embarrassment Caused by Former President Lungu’s Family

It is with great disappointment and concern that we address the recent embarrassment suffered by the government and people of South Africa, following the failure of Zambia’s former President Edgar Lungu’s family to honor an officially communicated diplomatic arrangement.

As was widely reported, the South African government made detailed preparations to receive what they had been led to believe would be the body of former President Lungu. Waterkloof Air Force Base was activated for a state level reception, complete with cabinet ministers, senior military officials, and a full protocol team. Aircraft parking bays were secured, ceremonial honor arrangements were made, and renowned SABC journalist Sophie Mokoena was deployed to cover what was expected to be a moment of international respect.

In an astonishing turn of events, no Zambian delegation from the Lungu family arrived. No communication was issued to cancel, reschedule, or explain the sudden absence. This lack of accountability and coordination resulted in a public and costly diplomatic failure.

The financial implications are significant. Mobilizing national resources, deploying high level personnel, and creating space at a military airbase are all exercises that come at a cost to South African taxpayers. Even more damaging, however, is the diplomatic fallout. South Africa’s gesture of goodwill and solidarity, an attempt to honor a former Zambian Head of State was met with silence and absence. It was, in every sense, a diplomatic slap in the face.

This incident undermines Zambia’s credibility on the regional and global stage. It sends a troubling message about our seriousness in international relations and may cause our South African counterparts to view Zambian institutions with diminished regard in future engagements.

Moreover, in an environment where political tensions and economic frustrations already exist, such a public affront risks fueling anti Zambian sentiment and increasing the chances of xenophobic backlash, something we must work tirelessly to avoid as citizens of a united continent.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) in Lusaka Province calls for immediate clarification and accountability from those responsible for this mismanagement. It is unacceptable for any family, regardless of political status to act in a manner that disrespects not only a foreign government but also embarrasses the Zambian people at large.

South Africa extended a hand of honor. That hand should not have been left hanging.

We express our gratitude to the South African government for their effort, their generosity of spirit, and their respect toward what they believed was a solemn occasion. As President Hichilema stated yesterday, we echo his sentiments and reemphasize that we regret deeply that their goodwill was taken for granted.

GODAZA WRITES TO ECL FAMILY URGING TIMELY REPATRIATION OF FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU’S BODY

19th June 2026

The Governance, Development, Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has written to the Family Spokesperson and Legal Counsel of the late former President Edgar Lungu to prioritize the repatriation of his body to Zambia.

GODAZA Executive Director Elias Mulenga said the development will allow the nation to properly mourn and honour his legacy.

In an official letter addressed to Legal Counsel Makebi Zulu, the Managing Partner at Makebi Zulu and Advocates lawyers representing the family of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu .

Mr. Mulenga expressed concern over delays in the funeral arrangements.

He urged restraint from engaging in political disputes during the mourning period.

Mr. Mulenga emphasized that prolonged uncertainty surrounding the former President’s final farewell was causing distress among citizens.

He added that the delay was undermining the dignity of the Office of the President.

Mr. Mulenga urged the family and legal representatives to disregard social media speculation.

He called for funeral proceedings to be handled with respect and national unity in mind.

The letter also noted that delays in the repatriation process could be perceived as a denial of Zambians’ right to mourn their former leader.

GODAZA described the situation as a human rights concern.

Mr. Mulenga called on the involved parties to work closely with the government to facilitate a smooth and timely process.

He stressed that doing so would ensure peace and stability during this challenging time.

As the nation continues to reflect on Lungu’s contributions to Zambia, Mr. Mulenga emphasized the importance of focusing on his legacy.

He urged stakeholders not to allow political tensions to overshadow the moment.

The Council of Catholic Bishops,

Church Mother Bodies,

Clergy close to the Lungu Family and the Patriotic Front

Law Association of Zambia

Dear Hon Sirs and Madams,

RE: CLERGY, LAZ AND CSO’S TO RESOLVE IMPASSE ON THE 6TH PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU’S FUNERAL.

Greetings to you all.

As Governance and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA), we write to you as we are deeply concerned about the ongoing impasse regarding the funeral procedures and conduct being exhibited by some aggrieved citizens on the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s funeral.

The current situation, marked by political differences between the United party for national development and the Patriotic Front (Tonse alliance), is not only causing unnecessary distress to the family of the deceased president but also subjecting the nation to regional embarrassment. We recognize the gesture by president Hakainde Hichilema and his government for according a full state funeral to the former President regardless of not having his remains in the country.

Kindly take not of our concerns:

- The decision to keep the body abroad is causing anguish and pain to many Zambians who wish to pay their last respects to their former Head of State and Commander in chief of the armed forces.
- This situation violates the rights of Zambians to mourn their former leader and is contrary to our Zambian norms, African culture, customs, and or traditions.
- The impasse is taking a toll on the peace and tranquility that Zambia has enjoyed for years, and it is imperative that we resolve this matter amicably with the involvement of all stake holders in the country.
- We also note that President Hakainde Hichilema, his administration, media staff have exhibited professional conduct amid the recent challenges surrounding the death of the former president by not responding to critics a gesture of honoring the late 6th president.

Our Appeal:

We respectfully appeal to the Council of Catholic Bishops, Church Mother Bodies, and Clergy close to the Lungu Family and the Law association of Zambia to intervene in this matter and convince both the bereaved family and the Tonse alliance to consider reviewing their decisions.
We feel these matters can still continue being on the table between the concerned parties even after the funeral. We urge you to engage with the government to find a solution that will allow the body to be brought back to Zambia for a befitting funeral procession as required both by law and as per tradition soonest.

Creating a better World for tomorrows futures
Key Considerations:

- Respect for the deceased and his family
- Upholding African culture, customs, and traditions
- Preserving peace and tranquility in Zambia
- Respect for President Hakainde Hichilema's government and the mandate given to him by the people of Zambia

A Call to Action:

We implore all stakeholders to put aside their differences and work towards a solution that will bring closure to the family and the nation. Zambia's stability and progress depend on our ability to resolve conflicts and work together towards a common goal.

Let us prioritize the dignity of the deceased, the well-being of the family, and the interests of the nation. We believe that through dialogue and mutual respect, we can find a solution that honors the legacy of former President Lungu and upholds the values of our great nation Zambia.
