🔴It is alleged that this Zimbabwean businessman and socialite, Lawrence Madzinganyama, has sparked widespread public outrage in South Africa after being caught on camera threatening unarmed women after one of them rejected his unwanted sexual advances at the newly-opened Vlamo Restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The dramatic incident, in which
Madzinganyama threatened to kill the women and walk away, occurred against a backdrop of heightened fear and national grief over a gruesome string of murders targeting women in Gauteng, including the Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein areas.
Police in South Africa have recovered nine bodies of women in a string of mysterious killings across Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, including 28-year-old Zimbabwean national Gracious Nkomo whose body was found along the R21 in Kempton Park.
The bodies were discovered in Kempton Park, Dawn Park, Olifantsfontein, Rhodesfield, and surrounding Ekurhuleni communities in Johannesburg, since July.
The victims were women in their 20s or 30s, and many were found half-naked clothed with visible bruises and scars.
Madzinganyama's aggressive threats against women unfolded at the upscale Vlamo Restaurant located at Sandton Gate along Winnie Mandela Drive, formerly William Nicol, horrifying hosts and guests alike.
Madzinganyama was recorded shouting at a group of female patrons after he was rejected.
Witnesses and social media reports show the altercation over his unwanted serial advances escalated rapidly, culminating in Madzinganyama boasting, "I'll put a bullet in all of you!" and "murder you" to the vulnerable women, demanding that he must be rejected politely.
Following the uproar inside, Vlamo took swift action to eject the businessman from the premises.
In a formal statement released subsequently, the restaurant condemned the menacing behaviour, emphasising that Madzinganyama does not work there and has no association with them, while expressing their disgust and commitment to ensuring a safe environment for guests.
They said any form of gender-based hostility, intimidation and abuse would not be tolerated on their property. Despite his removal, video footage of the incident spread rapidly across social media and mainstream media platforms, igniting a massive wave of public anger, outrage and condemnation.
The timing of Madzinganyama’s threats has amplified public anxiety due to an ongoing crisis of violent crime against women in South Africa.
South Africa is currently grappling with a terrifying wave of femicide, prominently highlighted by the discovery of multiple bodies of women in and around Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein, Gauteng.
The situation has grown so severe that high-profile figures, such as musical duo Major League DJZ, recently issued widespread public safety warnings advising women to avoid travelling alone in Johannesburg.
The state of emergency prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to issue an urgent directive to law enforcement, ordering that the investigations into the Kempton Park killings be prioritized without exception.
Police have been completely seized with the issue and are investigating the murders to bring perpetrators to justice.
In a society where statistics reveal a woman is murdered every 2.5 hours, Madzinganyama's brazen threats of gun violence are no longer treated as mere verbal arguments.
Instead, the public views them as a dangerous continuation of Gender-Based Violence culture. The swift action by Vlamo Restaurant to banish the patron reflects a growing corporate responsibility where businesses are forced to actively protect vulnerable patrons from predatory or threatening behaviour, especially reflecting toxic masculinity sometimes rooted in abusive patriarchy and misogyny.
Madzinganyama's aggression serves as a sobering reminder of how volatile the environment remains for women in South Africa.
Verbal threats of violence and aggression mirror the very real, lethal dangers playing out in nearby neighbourhoods like Kempton Park.
