The taxi drops me off on the outskirts of Saigon in front of what is clearly a residential home. I ring the bell and a kid opens the door.
The tiny space is filled with reel-to-reel tape machines, 8-track players, turntables, and other analog gear. Every single one of them is manufactured by SONY. "From Japan." he says "It's the best".
I spot immediately, a stack of 45s in the corner of the room. They are original 7inch singles by Le Thu, Thanh Thuyen, Che Linch, Hoang Oanh, and other greats of Vietnamese Bolero. The records themselves are not in great condition, but they do have sleeves, and they are very rare.
He has a long-play record that I have been looking for because I know the first track has an awesome sample, but there’s a shard missing from the disc making the first few songs unplayable. Pity.
His prize pieces are three reel-to-reel tapes in original boxes. He plays them for me and makes me a copy of them on cassette. They’re marvelous.
