Reasons for Fear of Igbo Odinani.
Many people, including some Igbo people themselves, hold negative views of Odinani due to deeply ingrained narratives that equate traditional ancestral practices with evil, witchcraft, or "idol worship".
(1) Religious Misinformation and Propaganda: Christian missionaries and later local pastors often described traditional Igbo practices as evil to promote their own faiths, leading to a long-standing "wrong story" that has been repeated until it was widely believed.
(2) Misunderstanding of Spirits and Rituals: Practices involving ancestors, nature deities, and the Supreme Being (Chukwu) are often misunderstood. Concepts like Ọgbanje (reincarnating spirits) are often seen as malevolent, while the role of a Dibia (native doctor/priest) is misinterpreted as malicious, rather than a method of restoring balance or seeking protection.
(3) Fear of Accountability and Ethical Standards: Odinani is perceived as a "tedious" and rigid system that demands high moral standards and absolute accountability. It is not a system where one can commit "atrocities" and easily seek forgiveness without proper cleansing or atonement (cleansing of nso ala—taboos).
Odinani is actually a system focused on maintaining harmony with the land, ancestors, and the Creator, rather than the malevolent forces often described in negative propaganda.
