🚨 Incident: Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 at Munich Airport 15 AUG 2026

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 VN-A867 operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi suffered a serious departure incident involving a late rotation, tailstrike, runway overrun, and subsequent landing gear damage upon its return to Munich Airport (MUC).

During takeoff from Munich's Runway 26L, the aircraft performed a very late rotation. Heavy clouds of dust and dirt were kicked up as the aircraft used up the remaining runway pavement. According to preliminary reports, the aircraft overran the end of the runway, resulting in damage to runway lights.

As the heavy aircraft finally became airborne, its tail struck the ground (tailstrike).

The flight crew climbed the aircraft to FL100 and reported a tyre pressure indication issue. Due to being heavily fueled for the long-haul flight to Hanoi, the crew initiated a fuel-dumping procedure to reduce landing weight.

Approximately 90 minutes after departure, the aircraft returned to MUC, executing two low approaches over Runway 26R before making a full emergency landing on the same runway.

Upon touchdown, the left main landing gear was trailing visible smoke and the aircraft became disabled on the active runway.

Nine people were injured after a lightning strike hit the apron at Arturo Michelena International Airport in Valencia during severe thunderstorms on Saturday evening, airport authorities confirmed.

Airport officials stated that the lightning strike did not damage any of the three aircraft parked on the apron at the time, despite the strike occurring in close proximity to them.

Eight of the injured were transported to the emergency department of Ciudad Hospitalaria Enrique Tejera for medical treatment and further evaluation.

The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that affected the area. Initial reports indicated that a lightning strike occurred near an aircraft on the airport ramp, prompting an emergency response.
