Cyprus’s overnight stays fell 7.7% in the first half of 2026, while Malta’s rose 9.9%.

However, the contrast goes beyond those headline figures. Overnight stays by international visitors declined 8.2% in Cyprus while growing 2.5% across the EU, according to Eurostat.

Meanwhile, separate research into five Mediterranean destinations found that earlier and repeated heatwaves are affecting how travellers perceive summer weather, adding to the case for adapting tourism infrastructure and supporting year-round visits.

Cyprus was not included in that study. The reports do not establish what caused the island’s decline or link it to heatwaves.

The figures count nights spent at tourist accommodation, not visitor arrivals. Fewer overnight stays do not automatically mean a matching fall in tourism revenue.

Swipe through for the comparisons and the wider Mediterranean picture.
