What could be the connection between bees and electronic music? Well, in the case of “Bee in the Cage”, by Case Against Time, a faulty piece of equipment. A synthesizer that refused to warm up and properly tune the generator oscillators was giving out odd output. It was particularly obvious on longer, continuous sounds. Instead of immediately looking for a solution, it seemed better to just continue with overdubs. The quest to find a bright solo, a distinguishing feature on top of the existing parts, ended up with fairly background sounds, more atmospheric than instrumental. These sounds, though, immediately gave the track its own unique ’face’. Electric bees.
Case Against Time is a very analogue, tactile electronic music project. Mostly handcrafted parts with occasional basic sequencing, but with modern conveniences like easy looping and moving cuts around in a DAW. A bridge between what computers seemed to promise to an “analogue” musician in the nineties and how old paradigms can live on in today's world.
How’s the synth doing now? That is a question for future releases.
