What does immigration have to do with cake? This video explains zero-sum thinking — the mental shortcut that makes us assume one person’s gain must be someone else’s loss. It explores how this belief in fixed resources fuels fear around immigration, and how that viewpoint can be shaped or distorted.

Britain took people and resources from Africa for many years. First, British traders took millions of Africans as slaves.

Later, Britain controlled many African countries and used their land, minerals, and labor to make Britain rich.

This left many African countries poor and unstable after independence.

Because of these problems, some Africans today leave their countries to look for safety or a better life. When the UK now tells African asylum seekers to “go back home,” it ignores the history. Britain helped create many of the problems in those countries by taking their wealth in the past.

For this reason, it does not make sense for the UK to act as if it has no connection to why people are migrating.

British people arguing about how refugees and asylum seekers are talked about in the UK.

Many people still do not understand why they come or who they are.

Across the UK, charities and community groups help them with important needs like housing, language lessons, legal advice, and support to start a new life safely.

The video reminds us that clear information and calm discussion are important so refugees and asylum seekers are treated with fairness and respect.

Shabana Mahmood is the UK Home Secretary her family originally came from Pakistan.

She is now planning new, stricter rules for refugees and asylum seekers.

Some people are criticising her for these plans.

They say her ideas are too hard on people who are escaping danger.

They also say she seems to be forgetting or distancing herself from her own family’s immigrant history.

She says, “I don’t want to die as a refugee in this country.”

For many years, Western media showed Europe and the USA as places with strong human rights and respect for all people. But many refugees who arrive learn that the reality is different. Life is hard. They face long waiting times, poor living conditions, few job chances, and many barriers.

In Cyprus and other parts of Europe, the promise of a better life often feels empty. Many refugees feel that the messages about freedom and opportunity are only nice words.

Cyprus also changes its citizenship rules again and again, making it harder for refugees to apply. Each year the process becomes more difficult. Some refugees have lived in Cyprus for 20 years and still decide to leave because they lose hope.

These problems also affect the country’s economy. Cyprus faces labor shortages, and international investors show less interest. Businesses need customers, but the market is small, which limits growth.

Many well-educated refugees also advise other skilled refugees not to choose Cyprus, saying it is not a place where their abilities and qualifications are valued.

At 23.9 applicants per 100,000 people, Cyprus recorded the second-highest rate of asylum applications in the European Union in August 2025, Eurostat said on Monday. If you can work hard enough to raise and save $10,000 in Africa after spending 20 years studying, then you already have the discipline and potential to build a stable future at home.

You don’t need to risk your life or give that money to smugglers who promise to take you to the U.S. or Europe, only for you to end up doing work far below your qualifications.

Your skills are valuable. Your life is valuable.

Invest in yourself, your community, and your own opportunities—don’t trade everything for an uncertain path that often leads to disappointment and exploitation.

The European Commission says that Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus are under strong migratory pressure because they received many migrants last year.

In 2026, these countries will get help from other EU countries.

This help can be:

taking some asylum seekers, or giving money.

The EU is creating a Solidarity Pool.

This will decide how many asylum seekers must be relocated, and how much each country must contribute.

Countries that are not under pressure must help in one of these ways:

1. Accept asylum seekers,

2. Pay €20,000 for each person they do not accept, or

3. Give money for operations in countries under pressure.

All EU countries will vote on this plan.

The minimum required is 30,000 relocations and €600 million in payments.

The report also lists 12 countries at risk of migratory pressure, such as Germany, France, Belgium, and Poland.

They must help but may get changes later if needed.

Another group of countries, including Austria and Czechia, are facing significant migration, so they must help but can ask for an exemption.

Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia say they do not want to take part in relocations.

Breaking News!

A small boat with a total of 21 Syrian nationals on board arrived in Cyprus, near the village of Rizokarpaso, on Thursday morning.

The 21 people, all male, were spotted by the Turkish Cypriot police at around 9am, and were all arrested. It is unclear what will happen to them next, given that the north does not have any legal framework or formal policy regarding asylum seekers.

The arrival of irregular migrants in small boats in Cyprus has become something of a rarity in recent months, with the Cypriot government, the European Union, and other countries in the region all having made steps to stem the flow of irregular migrants to the island.
