Sir Samuel White Baker is describing his first impressions of the southern outskirts of Nicosia as he first saw them traveling from Larnaca.

“We halted five miles from Lefkosia, where a new stone bridge was in process of construction and was nearly completed. We had already passed a long and extremely narrow Turkish bridge across the river about four miles in our rear. By pacing, I made the new bridge twenty-nine feet, the same width as the road, and I could not help thinking that a much less expensive commencement would have been sufficient to meet the requirements of the country. In Cyprus, the rainfall is generally slight and the earth is tenacious, and in dry weather exceedingly hard; if half the width of the road had been carefully metalled in the first instance, a great expense would have been saved at a time when the island was sadly in want of money; the natural surface of the firm soil would have been preferred by all vehicles except during rain when they would have adopted the metalled parallel way. It is easy to criticize after the event, and there can be no doubt that upon our first occupation of the island much greater traffic was expected, and the road between the two capitals was arranged accordingly. We halted for the night at the new stone bridge, which, as usual in Cyprus, spanned a channel perfectly devoid of water. On the following morning we marched to Lefkosia, and passing to the left of the walled town, we reached the newly-erected Government House, about a mile and a half distant, where we received a kind and hospitable welcome from the High Commissioner, Sir Garnet, and Lady Wolseley."

Carob trees are mainly located in numbers near coastal areas, but one can surely meet this majestic and ancient tree in the plains and the semi-mountainous areas of Nicosia. Even in the city.

If you get the chance to be near one in late August when the carobs have matured, don't hesitate to grab one directly from the tree, clean it with a cloth or some water and taste it!

The Carob tree or "Teratsia" is a plant originating in the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for nearly four thousand years. Carob trees must have existed in Cyprus since prehistoric times since the island is closely associated with the promotion of carobs in its culture. Carobs were also...

When the Greek Gods visited Nicosia...

Ledra would indeed be a city-kingdom during the Archaic period. During the Classical period, while initially there was not enough evidence, it now seems that it would have a more important role than the one that was originally believed, until of course the overthrow of all the Cypriot kingdoms by the Ptolemies. Fortunately, the reduced archaeological visibility of the Kingdom is gradually increasing.

Archaeological remains indicate that the kingdom of Ledra (if any) would flourish during the Archaic Period. During the Classical Period, it would lose its autonomy in another city-kingdom or it would be a simple urban center of transit character. Finally, during the Hellenistic period, it would again gain development under the Ptolemies.

Secondary and primary sources, but also archaeological remains are relatively few. There is no material or epigraphic evidence to support the existence of a kingdom other than that of Esarhaddon.

Nicosia, and consequently ancient Ledra, is neither close to the coast of the island nor to the copper-bearing layers. If we take into account that during the period of city-kingdoms a state could develop either because of access to areas rich in copper or because of its proximity to the coastline (trade) or even both, then we can understand why Ledra did not develop as much as the other states of its time.

Ancient Ledra was one of the cities-kingdoms of Cyprus during the 1st millennium BC. The term "kingdom" is used abusively as these states have never been kingdoms in the current sense. The term has been coined in research because it was used by the leaders of these states to describe themselves as "...
