The Dornier Do 335 earned its reputation as one of the fastest piston-powered aircraft to have ever taken flight.

During a period when the official world speed record stood at 755 km/h (469 mph), the Germans asserted that a Do 335 pilot achieved a remarkable speed of 846 km/h (474 mph) while maintaining level flight.

This astonishing velocity aside, the Do 335 was an unusually large fighter aircraft, boasting a height that allowed an average-sized person to stroll beneath it.

Laden with a weighty load of 9,600 kg (21,000 lb), the aircraft was burdened with significant design flaws.

F4U-1 Corsairs of VF-17, May 1943

Known as the "Jolly Rogers," VF-17 was the first squadron to operate the Corsair from an aircraft carrier, flying off the USS Essex in early 1943.

Despite initial concerns about the Corsair’s carrier suitability (that long nose and bounce-prone landings!), VF-17’s combat performance in the Pacific silenced the doubters.

With a high kill ratio, relentless es**rt missions, and proven air superiority, they helped establish the F4U Corsair as one of the most formidable fighters of the war.

Oberleutnant Werner Muffey, belonging to the Luftwaffe Kommando Sperling, enters the reconnaissance variant of the Ar 234

Its jet engines, powered by the Jumo 004 engines, allowed it to reach speeds over 450 mph (720 km/h), making it one of the fastest aircraft of the time.

Despite its advanced design, the Ar 234 was produced in limited numbers due to the war's later stages and Germany's declining resources.

WOW!

A F6F-5P Hellcat from VP-23, nicknamed the “Rough Trap,” making a.....landing aboard the USS Princeton (CVL-23).

The F6F-5P was a photo-reconnaissance variant of the rugged Hellcat fighter.

Stripped of guns to make room for cameras, it still had to face flak, fighters, and the unpredictable chaos of carrier landings.

In this case it was VERY chaotic.

The Handley Page HP.115 was an experimental aircraft developed in the 1960s to test the aerodynamics of slender delta wings, a design that would later influence supersonic jets like the Concorde.

With its distinctive sharp delta shape and lightweight frame, the HP.115 helped engineers understand how such wings performed at low speeds and high angles of attack, crucial for supersonic flight control.

AF Westland Whirlwind P7110 is seen in flight.

The Whirlwind was one of the RAF’s first twin-engine, single-seat fighter aircraft, and P7110 was part of an early production batch delivered during World War II.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines, the Whirlwind was known for its sleek, futuristic design and heavy armament.....four 20mm Hispano cannons concentrated in the nose, making it one of the most heavily armed fighters of its time.
