To complete the trio of Chroma’s ProgRAM releases, we must visit the middle one from 2013, too. This one I honestly didn’t play out that much back in the day and listening back to it now, I don’t really get why because it’s yet another bloody banger. So let’s have a closer look, shall we? It starts with some heavy breakbeats, sawtooth bassline and a deceptively mellow synth line. That’s the A side, that’s Grindhouse.

But, as with the previous ones, my heart belongs to the flip. It’s another moody cut with a heartfelt vocal sample that goes straight for the jugular. The overall vibe is nice, the bassline is that lovely warm kind with the occasional growl adding some contrast to keep things interesting. It also progressively evolves which is something, as you may already know, I really love about music in general. But if I were to highlight just one thing that does it for me about this particular tune, it’s without any doubt the drums. Smooth, crisp, with lots of variation, a masterclass in how to build a drum track that can single-handedly carry the rest and pushes the tune to a whole another level.

Going against the clock, today we’re looking at the single that precedes 201 Dub and Sovereign, is actually their first single released on ProgRAM and third outing in total. These guys had a crazy good start back in 2012 and this one certainly cements it. On the A side you have the techy beast called Acetate with mechanical drums and a nice prominent synth which I used to play quite a lot. In many cases this would be an obvious pick for me. But not here. Why?

Because the flip literally flips the narrative here. So Alone is yet another godly tune carrying the Chroma signature. Spot on drums (like if you were expecting anything else), a melancholic vibe set by some nice pads and great use of vocal samples. And then the drop comes, offering some chef’s kiss type of contrast as the bassline mumbled and the midrange growls. Absolute class. And of my personal favorites was to double drop this with LSB’s The Hurting as I always felt like these two were just made for each other.

Starting the next chapter today and it’s going to be a pretty special one. Now we’ve already covered some legends in the scene, some anthems of the genre and a lot of gourmet stuff, too. Well right now we’re gonna be talking about a name that many of you may not have heard of before or may have forgotten about. I didn’t. The name is Chroma. These guys were the absolute dons of all stuff rolling. Even before coming together as a collective or in some cases solo again later, they have been smashing out tune after tune of incredible quality, the only criticism you could possibly think of would be they haven’t releases that much nor that often.

Chroma are Phobia, Sato and Tyrone. And we’re gonna start with my ultimate favorite of theirs right off the bat. So as I mentioned, these guys didn’t put out tons of releases and for the most part, they’ve been rather prolific from 2012 to 2014 and signed music to the likes of C.I.A., Commercial Su***de, Renegade Hardware or ProgRAM. I happen to own all the releases with the latter and the last single in line carries Sovereign. I used to smash the hell out of this tune back then. It has this unique atmosphere, an absolute menace of a switch from the straight rolling drums into a naughty amen twice throughout the tune, catching everyone not familiar with it off guard, assuring extra impact points. And overall, it’s such a great piece of music to listen to. It still gets me every single time.

One last stop with Chris.Su takes us even earlier, not in the year as we’re still in 2004 - and we’re still with Commercial Su***de, too - but in the catalogue number as this was release 18 there. Apart from his solo stuff, Chris was also a part of the Hungarian supergroup Tactile, consisting of other local legends like Bratwa, Longman, Safair and SKC. Now I don’t want to fall down deep into the Hungarian drum & bass lore but if you think UK collectives are running deep, I encourage you to do some research on these guys, you might be surprised how much they’ve been involved in over the years.

Now the A side is called Undercover Dub by Tactile and as the name suggest, it’s a proper dubbed out affair. But you know me, I’m a sucker for percussion-driven techy rollers so if there’s anything like that present, it will always be my pick. This record is no different in that regard as Chris.Su’s Paradise is literally a paradise for my ears. It has an incredible atmosphere, great progression and above all, the drums are an absolute treat on this one. Everything just comes together so nicely it’s hard not to get lost in listening to this track all over again.

Exactly 5 months ago, on April 22, I decided I wanted to start running regularly and train for a half marathon. There was no bet, no major life event, I just realized even the sporadical running helped me a lot mentally last autumn and I didn’t really want to go back to just sitting in front of my computer all the time.

Now the original plan was to try the one taking place at home, in Olomouc, in the middle of June but since that one was already full, I eventually decided to try the one in Ústí nad Labem in September instead. In hindsight it was definitely for the best - I’m not saying I wouldn’t have made it in June but I would have definitely run a lot slower and the experience would have been more painful, I’m sure.

So here I was, building a training plan, slowly finding my stride, discovering everything on the go. Like finding out my „easy“ runs are everything but easy and how my long runs are still sitting well outside of where they should sit, too. How to not aim for the tempo but for the heart rate and/or feeling instead. Or how to actually do easy runs even though you constantly need to hold back. Or how not to go for a long run at 2PM in the direct sunlight when there’s 35 degrees outside, you haven’t slept properly the night before and the only thing you ate that day prior to the run was a KitKat bar. Or how to go about your drinking and eating habits in a way that you won’t need to stop midway through a long run in a field to take a dump. Or how to use different pairs of shoes for different runs. Yes, I could have watched tutorials, I could have listened to podcasts, I could have asked the AI about every single thing before trying it out and usually failing myself but there’s something oddly satisfying about learning things the hard way.

This also applies to the race I managed to finish on Sunday. I was hoping maybe I could go sub 2 hours even though I have never actually run that fast in the training, at least for more than half the distance anyway. I didn’t make it. Going even further back in time, today we’re travelling all the way to 2004. Klute’s Commercial Su***de releases its record number number 21 and it’s a courtesy of Chris.Su and SKC, the Hungarian powerhouse responsible for most of the country’s global drum & bass representation in the early noughties. The masters of all things techy and rolling. And beyond. And this record sees these guys at one of their finest.

Starting off with the atmospheric Desert Siege that eventually turns into a proper rolling madness, while an incredible tune for sure, I still need to go with the flip. For Crash is such a crazy tune it would be criminal not to choose it. The ride setting the tone from the get go. The synth line riff that’s driving you insane. The heavy drums with extra ringing hi hats. And the “I think I’m gonna crash” vocal sample sending the tune on the drop. So deceptively simple yet so massive and one of my favorite techy rollers of all time. Just absolute freaking mayhem if you ask me.

Keeping up with the Hungarian legend Chris.Su, we move on to a few years later when Eatbrain releases their first Various Artists album called Tales Of The Undead. With a couple of exclusive tunes making it onto 3 separate samplers and me being quite a fan of their output back then, I obviously needed to get them all. The third one than carries not just a stomper of a tune called Sniper from the Italian badboy Dabs, but also another proper banger called Underground Culture, a courtesy of Chris on the buttons and Kryptomedic on the mic duties.

Now to be completely honest with you, around this time I started to slowly lose interest in the neurofunk movement as some of it was already evolving in the direction I personally wasn’t feeling too much. But looking back, there was still a plenty of great music available, this being one of the cases in point. Yes, it is loud. Yes, it is heavy. Yes, it is technical. But it still keeps the atmospheric edge, too. It evolves, it tells a story. And that is what I always loved the most about music in general.

Next up is a record from 2014 and again it’s something very different. This time, our destination is RAM Records and the person responsible is Chords. Now this guy appeared all of a sudden in 2012 with his Culture Shock’esque sounding single for W10 Records - especially Radio immediately caught people’s interest with its switch into house tempo midway through only to unfold into full on drum & bass banger again. Shortly after that, he signed to RAM and has released a couple of singles as well as EPs with them while they were still in business. The second single there caught on quite well and features arguably my favorite tune of his called High Groove.

Again, it has that signature funky and vibey sound that stood out amidst the full on cheesy vocal stuff or more laid back melodic liquid, taking the best of both worlds - the dancefloor impact as well as the musicality. It’s no easy feat to weave these together, especially in such a fine way Chords did it, you gotta love his ability to balance his tunes in a specific way, where the groove is highly infectious, yet you also need to put on your stinkiest bassface when the bass drops.
