The Zlín Zoo has a new addition – the pampas hare. 🐇 These sturdy rodents with long legs and brown-gray fur have grown by ten young this year. Visitors can find them together with the adults in the South American exhibit.

Steppe maras live in the wild in the arid pastures and open semi-deserts of central and southern Argentina. They are exclusively herbivores, capable of grazing large amounts of grass, leaves, and shoots per day, which allows them to survive for relatively long periods without water.

Refreshment on hot days. 💧 Brno's network of public drinking fountains has grown by seven new ones, which have been added to the dozens already in operation. There are now a total of around forty available in the city.

👉 People can now fill up their water bottles in Jundrov, Lesná, Černá Pole, and Královo Pole, among other places. The city has published a map showing their exact locations.

They are in this together. 🇨🇿🤝🇸🇰 A Czech and Slovak woodcarver worked together in the courtyard of the Žerotín family castle in Valašské Meziříčí in the Vsetín region. This was part of a small cross-border project called Rok na Valašsku a na Kysuciach. The result of the collaboration between woodcarver Martin Cigánek and sculptor Michal Husár are wooden sculptures. These will become part of the Advent season on both sides of the border.

A new ornament in the center of Brno. 🌳 Above Zelný trh, gardeners have planted a new tree – a sweetgum, which tolerates the demanding urban environment well. A special bench has been added around both the trunk and the crown, protecting the tree from damage while also enhancing the public space. The tree is larger than those usually planted, and thanks to suitable conditions, it could grow up to 25 meters tall in the coming years.

A survey has revealed a cemetery and fish tanks. 🔍 Archaeologists are examining the subsoil of the future Dornych complex in Brno. At the site of the former Prior department store, they discovered not only the reinforced concrete piles of the old building but also the remains of the Haas Mill, fish tanks with fish bones, and a modern-age cemetery with roughly 60 buried remains. The finds date back as far as the 12th century.

➡️ The research is taking place alongside construction, which is scheduled for completion at the end of 2027.

Without a wheel but full of determination, he was heading to Poland. 🚛
On Wednesday morning, police stopped a truck swerving on the D2 motorway near Blučina. The driver was transporting cargo even though a wheel was missing from the rear trailer. A witness alerted the emergency line about the dangerous driving. The police stopped the driver, prohibited him from continuing his journey, and imposed a deposit of ten thousand crowns.

Have you seen her yet? 👀 Next to the statue of Jošt on Moravské náměstí in Brno stands an eight-meter-tall Venus of Věstonice. The inflatable model was created by artists from the Brno-based design studio VISUALOVE. This year, Brno is commemorating 100 years since the discovery of this iconic figurine in South Moravia.

An important milestone in the construction of the aquarium pavilion 🐠🛠️

At the Hodonín Zoo, workers on Wednesday installed two acrylic walls that will serve as the main viewing panels for the planned exhibits. Each measures 5 × 2.5 meters, weighs 3.5 tons, and can withstand the pressure of dozens of cubic meters of water. The installation was carried out using special suction cups and a crane. The remaining aquarium walls are made of special concrete.

The construction, costing over 68 million CZK, began in April and is scheduled for completion next summer. Visitors could enter the new premises no sooner than next summer—after the aquariums are stocked with fish and the fish have undergone quarantine. The previous pavilion was damaged by a tornado.

👒 Visitors to the town hall in Kyjov in the Hodonín region can currently view an exhibition of historical scarves, hats, and other traditional costume items. Collector Ladislav Lung is exhibiting selected pieces from his collection of nearly three thousand items. The oldest pieces date back to the mid-19th century. The exhibition will run until August 31.

🐦 The nesting of swallows is delaying the demolition of the old bridge over the Dyje relief arm in the Poštorná district of Břeclav.

➡️ Although the construction company installed protective nets on the underside of the bridge, several pairs of swallows have nested on the structure. To protect these birds, demolition will begin in early September, once the nests have been abandoned.

➡️ Since May, the Road and Motorway Directorate has been building a temporary bridge near the old bridge, to which it plans to transfer all traffic.

The renovation of a house on Mečová Street in the center of Brno has revealed painted decorations dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. 🎨 Infrared photography and chemical analysis confirmed that some of the paintings are even older. The multi-layered paintings are on the wooden beams of the ceilings and on the walls, with some parts in poor condition and affected by fungi.

➡️ As a result, the renovation also includes preserving this historic discovery. Restorers plan to carefully dismantle the beams, restore them, and reinstall them. Besides delaying the completion date, the discovery opens new possibilities for use. Instead of the originally planned offices, the city may open the space to the public.

➡️ According to Michal Konečný, a historian from the National Heritage Institute, the burgher’s house on Mečová Street is one of the few with such an old history that has preserved its architectural appearance from the second half of the 18th century on the outside.
