🐾 A four-ton wire sculpture titled Vulpes Gott has been installed at the lower part of T.G. Masaryk Square in Zlín yesterday. It is the work of František Skála, who created it from galvanized steel and stainless steel wire. The sculpture has traveled to Zlín from Liberec and is part of the collective exhibition Silent Face: Man and Dog in Contemporary Czech Visual Art, which was opened by the regional gallery in Zlín. The exhibition will be on display until January 18, 2026.

The Memorial to the Fallen once again adorns the center of Blansko. 🕊️

After several months of restoration, the marble monument to the victims of the First World War has returned to Svobody Square. Restorer Jan Leitgeb repaired cracks, cleaned the entire monument, and restored its original gilded inscriptions. Parts of the six-meter-high column were then reassembled with the help of a crane.

But one mystery remains. Neither historians nor the public have been able to determine what originally decorated the top of the memorial. According to the restorer, it may have been a legionary eagle—or at least its installation was planned.

Scottish tones and the aroma of whisky. 🎶 The Brno festival Moravian Autumn kicked off this year in a Scottish spirit. On Monday, the courtyard of the Besední dům resonated with the bagpipes played by Robert Jordan. Visitors could try out traditional dances or taste Scottish drinks.

The festival commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of conductor Charles Mackerras. The program carries a strong British imprint – for example, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra will perform. The main part of the festival begins on 12 October at the Janáček Theatre.

🌳 This week, an arborist carried out a pull test on a maple tree in the garden of Villa Tugendhat. It’s an instrumental method used to assess the stability of trees and their root systems. According to Brno’s public greenery department, it's a relatively costly procedure used only in exceptional cases – typically for old trees that are of particular interest to preserve. The test takes around two hours, and the results are still pending.

🦡 A baby giant anteater was born last week at the Zlín Zoo. Visitors can spot it on the back of its mother, nine-year-old Miffy, in the exhibit below the tropical Yucatan hall.

Starting this week, visitors in Brno can explore a virtual model of the city’s future railway station and its surroundings. The exhibition, prepared by the Railway Administration and Brno Communications, will be open at the Brno Exhibition Centre until the end of the year. Since last week, a static model has also been on display in the city centre.

After more than a year, the renovation of the Brno crematorium has been completed. The work, costing almost CZK 100 million, included the modernization of cremation furnaces, facilities, technical equipment, cooling and freezing rooms, and the adjacent columbarium.

➡️ The repairs were carried out without restricting operations and in accordance with the requirements of conservationists.

➡️ The original furnaces from the 1990s were no longer economical or environmentally friendly, said Lea Olšáková, director of Brno's Funeral and Cemetery Services. Thanks to new technologies, carbon monoxide and dust emissions will be reduced by up to half.

➡️ The functionalist crematorium building is the work of architect Ernst Wiesner. It has been in operation since 1930. It has undergone several renovations during its existence. It is a national cultural monument.

The Brno Public Transport Authority has a new mascot – a red dragon. In an online poll, people chose the name Čenda Štatlík for him. 🐉🚋

👉 In the first round of the poll, almost 1,500 people submitted name suggestions, and in the second round, more than 3,500 people chose from six favorites. The names Štatlík and Čenda received the most votes. Since the difference was only a few votes, the transport company decided to combine the two favorites.

👉 The dragon's appearance was designed by a long-time employee of the transport company who is soon retiring. It is a symbolic culmination of his career.

👉 Passengers will encounter Čenda Štatlík at events, on posters, and on social media. He will also become the face of the new DPMBinfo app.

📸 Photographs by Libuše Jarcovjáková and works by her deceased father are on display in Zlín. The exhibition, entitled Make some space, captures, among other things, the feelings of exhaustion that the author experienced at a symposium in Mikulov. The exhibition will run at Kolektiv.Haus until November 17.

🎹 Czech and Japanese musicians from the Faculty of Music JAMU connected across continents in a unique live concert at EXPO 2025 in Osaka. Thanks to the MVTP technology, a Japanese pianist Kento Satsuma in Brno and a Czech percussionist Martin Opršál in Osaka performed together in real time, as if they were in the same room.

👉 The event was simultaneously streamed in Theatre on Orlí street in Brno for the public. The second part of stream included jazz improvisations inspired by Leoš Janáček, performed by saxophonist Pavel Zlámal and colleagues.

👉 The Modular video transmission platform, enables high-quality video and audio transmission with minimal latency and 8K resolution, allowing musicians to play together over more than 12,000 kilometers.

🌎 A total of 663 photovoltaic panels now cover five rooftops of Mendel University buildings in Brno. The university’s own energy production is intended to help make the campus operations more sustainable. The total investment cost the university seven million crowns.

Scala will undergo structural reinforcement. 🏗️ The city of Brno will begin repairing the damaged structure of the building between Moravské and Jakubské náměstí, which once housed the University Cinema Scala and the Bolek Polívka Theatre. The project has received approval from the fire authorities, making it possible to prepare an application for a building permit. The development was reported by the iROZHLAS.cz website.

➡️ The building has been closed since the summer of 2023. Screenings and theatre performances have temporarily moved to alternative venues. The city will continue to negotiate the future use of the building with Masaryk University.
