Greek farmers protest with tractors on highways for third week, threatening tourism

Farmers in Greece are protesting for the third week against the delayed payment of European subsidies by their government and have now refused to meet with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis until the government accedes to some of their demands, the daily Kathimerini reported today. The farmers' protests include blockades of motorways, ports and border crossings and, if they last until the Christmas holidays, could cause losses for hoteliers, restaurant owners and local transport operators. According to Greekreporter, some tourists are already cancelling bookings for the winter holidays in fear.

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele died violent deaths in their Los Angeles home, and police are investigating their deaths. Rob Reiner was an American film director, actor, and producer who rose to worldwide fame with This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally..., A Few Good Men, and many others, and who also made a significant impact as an actor on the television series All in the Family. His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, worked as a photographer and was his life partner and charity collaborator, and together they founded organizations supporting child education and public policy. Rob Reiner first married actress Penny Marshall in 1971, adopted her daughter Tracy, and divorced in 1981. He married Michele, whom he met while filming When Harry Met Sally..., in 1989 and together they had three children, sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy. Reiner made a number of iconic films, greatly influenced American cinema, and was also a public political and social activist.

The Peace Prize: from FIFA to Trump, from the Nobel Committee to Machado. Who was more grateful?

In December, two personalities received the Peace Prize. On 5 December, US President Donald Trump was awarded the Peace Prize by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the FIFA 2026 World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Trump, who had originally expected to win the Nobel Peace Prize, eagerly hung the medal around his own neck, saying it was one of the greatest honours of his life, adding that he had "saved millions and millions of lives". Less than a week later, the Nobel Committee awarded the peace prize to Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado, with only her daughter present to receive the award. Machado herself arrived in Norway late at night and at a subsequent press conference at the Grand Hotel in Oslo expressed her great gratitude for the honour.

Anniversary of the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos sparks more protests in Athens

Huge protests were held in Athens on the anniversary of the 2008 death of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos. The demonstrators, who had gathered in their thousands, marched to Syntagma Square in Athens, where police were waiting ready for them. Violence and rioting also occurred during the march and protests. Grigoropoulos was killed by a police officer, sparking a wave of protests and violence in the country.

Protesting Greek farmers clashed with police in Crete, AFP reported. Farmers across Greece are continuing demonstrations from last week over rising costs, low farmgate prices and delays in European subsidy payments. The partial suspension of subsidy payments is linked to tighter controls introduced by the EU after several scandals involving illegal spending. State-run Greek television ERT showed dozens of farmers with stones and sticks attacking police vehicles. Police tried to prevent the protesters from entering the international airport in the city of Chania. The police used tear gas against the farmers and then withdrew from the scene.

Williot Swedberg was the scourge of the "White Ballet", who finished the game with nine men after defenders Frano García and Álvaro Carreras were sent off.
