Finally, I caught him! ❤️💜💙🧡

I had been trying to photograph this little bird for several years. In Maasai Mara, the African pygmy kingfisher is quite rare. The bird is only 8 cm (3.15 inches) long and very shy. I searched for him for so long and without success that he decided to come to me himself. I was relaxing on the terrace of my tent when the kingfisher perched on a branch of a bush right next to me. Luckily, I had my camera with me.

For 10 years now, I’ve been photographing the leopard Luluka in the Masai Mara National Reserve. I met her in October 2015. She was the sweetest cub I had ever seen. Since then, we’ve spent so much time together that sometimes I feel my kids see me less often than she does. We’ve shared many joyful and sad moments together, and our friendship continues...

Yellowstone deer or as they call it in America – elk! 😁
European American settlers used the word “elk” to describe the animal, which is the word used in Europe for moose 🙈

So for European tourists there is a little difficulty in understanding what animal we are talking about. But it’s simple! In American English, an elk is a moose, and a deer is an elk. And the biological species of this deer is called wapiti.

I have always loved black and white animal portraits. Back in the film era, I used to shoot on black and white film. When I switched to digital, I abandoned my experiments with black and white photography. Rarely did I edit color shots into black and white, but the result usually didn’t satisfy me.

When Pentax released the monochrome version of the K3-III DSLR, I started thinking about black and white animal portraits again, but somehow never got around to it. This time, I did! And the result exceeded all expectations. I am very pleased. The best part is that I don’t have to struggle in Photoshop. The picture comes out exactly as I need it to be. Of course, I will continue with color photography. It’s hard to convey the full beauty of wildlife without color. But for variety and a special atmosphere, I will occasionally shoot with the Pentax K3-III Monochrome 🤍🖤

I spent this morning at Ras Al khor flamingo sanctuary. There were a lot of birds. Today I came here to take some video, but also took a few photos 🦩🦩

I’ve been photographing Bahati for already 8 years. It’s interesting that yesterday was first time for many years when I was lucky to photograph her small cub!

Goodbye kiss 😽

Leopard cubs often stay with their mothers until they turn one and a half years old. Girls leave later and boys leave a bit earlier, but the day always comes for two grown up cats to part ways as they cannot share their territory.

Jilimi stayed with her mother for the usual year and a half. I was waiting for the farewell moment to come, spending my whole time with this wonderful family trying not to lose their sight. I really wanted to see how the parting would go.

Luluka had generally been pretty strict to her daughter and yet that morning something in her behaviour changed. She was extraordinarily sweet to the grown up child. They played together and licked each other and laid next to each other all morning. It all became clear by the evening — Luluka had been preparing for the farewell and had simply wanted to give her daughter all her tenderness and care to the last drop. At night she left Jilimi in a dense bush and abandoned her.

For two days Jilimi was calling her mother, not yet realizing that it was pointless. Her mom was not coming back.

Later, as Jilimi was overcome by severe hunger, there was no trace left of her whiny growls. The young leopard turned into a predator again and went hunting. Thus began the adult life of this beautiful blue-eyed cat...

The grey crowned crane has an uncommon and elegant appearance. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful birds in Africa. People of Uganda would definitely agree with me. Not in vain that the crowned crane appeared on the coat of arms of the state!

More than four years I’ve been trying to photograph newborn cubs of leopard Luluka. Nature rewarded me for my patience and perseverance. I did it finally! Beautiful Luluka became mother at the end of October. I immediately flew to Kenya to my home Masai Mara reserve to try my luck for the third time. This time everything worked out 😻

Let's hope and believe that the cubs will survive and two more beautiful leopards will walk through savannah. By the way, we were already able to determine the s*x of one of the two cubs. At least one of them is a boy.
