Zambia is facing growing challenges in water security, exacerbated by severe droughts linked to climate change:
• Access to safe drinking water in Zambia varies widely, with approximately 68% of the urban population having access, compared to only 53% in rural areas.
• Only about 36% of Zambians have access to basic sanitation.
• In Lusaka, almost 50% of treated water is lost before it reaches households.
• Frequent power cuts resulting from hydropower shortages further disrupt water supply.

These challenges are very real for people in Zambia.

Durabilité urbaine pour Dakar 🇸🇳

À Afripoli, nous croyons que les grands changements commencent par des partenariats solides et sincères. Nos échanges avec le maire Aboubacar Djamil Sané et son équipe de la Mairie des Parcelles Assainies en sont un bel exemple : ensemble, nous explorons comment rendre la ville plus durable, plus résiliente et plus proche des besoins de sa communauté.

L’énergie solaire, l’aménagement urbain ou encore les initiatives culturelles ne sont pas pour nous des projets isolés, mais des pièces d’un même puzzle. Chacune de ces dimensions contribue à bâtir une ville où les écoles, les centres de santé et les espaces publics bénéficient directement de solutions concrètes et durables.

Cette coopération va au-delà de la technique : c’est aussi une rencontre entre visions, entre municipalités et entre cultures. Our Regional Manager Vojtěch Bílý gave an in-depth interview to the Czech news server iDNES.cz

He discussed security challenges (migration, climate change, Islamist groups), the influence of China and Russia, the approach of US, and why Europe must invest in meaningful partnerships if it wants to be a good neighbour to Africa.

The conversation also highlighted how Central Europe can see Africa not as a threat but as a continent of opportunities – with fast-growing markets, new partnerships beyond post-colonial ties, and a growing role of regional powers.

⚡From Ghana to Brno and now helping deploy solar tech back home — Mawuli Awuah Drah has quite a story. As Afripoli’s Energy Analyst, he’s swapped lecture halls for real-world projects, bringing Czech know-how to West Africa. We asked him about his journey, his favourite things in Czechia, and what he misses most from Ghana (spoiler: it’s delicious).

🔵 Dear Martin, could you introduce yourself and your role in Afripoli?
🚀 My name is Martin Awuah Drah. I’m originally from Ghana and currently working as an Energy Analyst at Afripoli. My role has evolved since I joined. I started out working on analytical reports on the renewable (specifically solar) energy landscape in West Africa, mapping out business and investment opportunities. Now, my work is more focused on project implementation, where I’m assisting in the field deployment of our mobile solar power plant project in Ghana.

🔵 We know that you studied energy security at Masarykova univerzita in Brno. What brought you to this topic?
🚀Yes, I studied Energy Policy, which is the English version of the Energy Security program at MUNI in Brno. In Ghana, after your first degree, you do a compulsory one-year service to the country. I was posted to the Upper East Region, near the border with Burkina Faso, which is one of the more deprived parts of the country. I worked with staff from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development on a World Bank–funded program called the Ghana Social Opportunities Project (GSOP). The program had elements of climate mitigation, which became my second introduction to energy and climate issues. Combined with my Political Science background, I started developing interest in the sector and led me to pursue the program at MUNI.

🔵So how did you enjoy studying in Brno? And why is Prague better?
🚀Brno is a traditional student city, always full of students, which makes the environment lively and supportive. I would choose Brno for studying, but Prague for living. Prague offers more opportunities for personal and professional growth.

🔵Thank you for the insight! And what brought you to Czechia in the first place?
🚀I knew about Czechia since secondary school through my Geography classes, but I only seriously considered it after a friend told me about study opportunities here. The tuition fees were the lowest among all the countries I researched including the UK, Netherlands, US, Canada, and Australia while the quality of education was on par. The cost of living was also much more affordable, so I decided Czechia was the best place to further my studies and start building my career.

🔵That is really interesting. So what do you think about the future of relations between Czechia and Ghana?
🚀Czechia and Ghana already have a good foundation, dating back to the 1960s when our first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, visited Czechoslovakia. I believe relations will only get better. There’s already cooperation in the health sector every year, Czech medical doctors travel to Ghana for surgical programs, and recently Ghanaian doctors have also visited Czechia for exchange programs. I think there’s even more potential in economic cooperation. Ghana has vast economic opportunities and natural resources that Czech companies could tap into through mutually beneficial partnerships, particularly in agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and security.

🔵Now on an easier note. What is one fun fact about you?
🚀I prefer a quiet life.

🔵And what is something you really like about Czechia and miss about Ghana?
🚀I miss Ghanaian food. Even though there are African shops here, it’s just not quite the same as back home. In Czechia, I really appreciate how efficient the public transport system is, the metro, trams, and buses, and also how safe the country feels.

Au Ghana, l’agriculture reste un pilier de l’économie – pourtant, de nombreuses fermes rurales et unités de transformation fonctionnent hors réseau ou avec un accès irrégulier à l’électricité.

Cela limite la capacité des producteurs locaux à irriguer régulièrement, à stocker des denrées périssables ou à transformer les récoltes en produits à plus forte valeur ajoutée. Une énergie instable signifie aussi plus de pertes, une productivité réduite et moins d’opportunités économiques.

This limits local producers’ ability to irrigate consistently, store perishable crops, or process harvests into higher-value goods. Moreover, unreliable energy means higher losses, lower productivity, and fewer economic opportunities.

Data-driven farming starts above the ground.

Agriculture is a strategic priority across many African countries — not only as a source of livelihoods, but also as a driver of innovation, sustainability and food security.

In this context, we introduce TROLL: a Czech-made hyperspectral nano-satellite designed for precision agricultural monitoring.

The technology enables a new level of insight to support local planning, farm productivity and climate resilience:

Source d'énergie solaire indépendante pour l'Afrique

L'accès à l'énergie reste un défi structurel dans de nombreuses régions d'Afrique.
En Zambie, par exemple :
➡️ Seuls 43 % de la population ont accès à l'électricité
➡️ Dans les zones rurales, ce chiffre tombe à 14,5 %

Le pays dépend de l'hydroélectricité (83 % de la production d'électricité). Mais les sécheresses récurrentes ont mis en évidence la fragilité de cette dépendance. À mesure que la variabilité du climat augmente, la stabilité du réseau diminue, laissant de nombreuses communautés dépendantes de générateurs diesel coûteux et polluants.

☀️ La stratégie énergétique nationale de la Zambie vise à changer cette situation.
Elle identifie l'énergie solaire comme un pilier essentiel de la diversification du bouquet énergétique du pays.
Actuellement, seuls 3 % de l'électricité zambienne proviennent de l'énergie solaire, mais l'objectif est de porter ce chiffre à 30 % d'ici à 2030.

Independent Solar Power Source for Africa

Energy access remains a structural challenge across many African regions.

In Zambia, for instance:
➡️ Only 43% of the population has access to electricity
➡️ In rural areas, that figure drops to just 14.5%
The country depends on hydropower (83% of electricity generation). But recurring droughts have exposed the fragility of this reliance. As climate variability increases, grid stability declines – leaving many communities dependent on expensive and polluting diesel generators.
