Do you find yourself throwing an EQ on your track and sweeping around looking for something to cut? Or spending 10 minutes setting up a reverb just to decide in the end that there's no need for any reverb to begin with?

It's very easy as a producer , particularly a newer one, to mix through trial and error. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, especially as you're learning your tools, but it is a habit that at some point you should try to leave behind. Before adding any plugin or effect, really stop and think about what the problem is that you trying to fix and exactly how you're going to fix it. Maybe even say it out loud to help you really commit e.g. "I'm going to cut 5dB from 12k". Then make your move.

There's a good chance you're going to be wrong, and actually you needed to cut at maybe 5k, but the point is you are now very aware of how far you were off. As you keep practicing you'll start to watch that gap get narrower and narrower until you can pin point what you need without thinking. This goes for everything, of course, not just EQ. Soon you'll see that mixing a song doesn't take you multiple days any more, but just a few hours!

If you're struggling with not knowing what the next move is to fix your mix, drop me a DM and we'll see if we can get there together 🙂

One of the quickest ways to take your mixing game up a level is to stop mixing everything individually. It doesn't matter how good your snare sounds on its own if it gets lost in the mix! This is more of a mindset issue than a technical one, as it's easy as producers to forgot that the listener will be hearing the song as one cohesive piece of art.

A lot of the times, when people ask me to fix up their mix, they ask how I got everything to sound so 'clean'. Usually, it's as simple as cutting big chunks of frequencies that don't need to be there. Sure, maybe the guitars sound amazingly thick when in solo, but when blended with the rest of the mix, that low-end is clashing with the bass and the drums, and even sometimes the vocals. The same of course goes the other way. Maybe you want your bass to be this warm, low-end only monster so you've cut away the highs, but it's that high-end that lets it cut through the mix when it's all together.

Don't forgot to hear the song as the listener will, and not just as a producer can! If you've got a mix that you're struggling with, DM me and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction 🙂

Was an absolute pleasure working with to mix their cover of Sigrid's Sucker Punch.
They take pop songs and give them a punk/metal cover, so it was a lot of fun playing between the 'sparkle' of pop and the grimy 'dirt' of metal. I think we came to a happy balance. 🎧😁
