Banning AI in education feels responsible.
I get why schools are doing it.

It looks like control.
It sounds like integrity.
It promises fairness.

But we’ve been here before.

Calculators were banned.
The internet was restricted.
Even spell-check raised alarms.

Not because they harmed learning.
But because they changed how learning happened.

Right now, AI is being treated the same way.

Blocked on school networks.
Labeled as cheating.
Discussed in policies more than classrooms.

And meanwhile…

Students are still using it.
Quietly.
Unevenly.
Without guidance.

That’s the real risk.

When we ban tools instead of teaching judgment,
we don’t stop behavior.
We push it underground.

AI doesn’t remove thinking.
Bad task design does.

If an assignment can be completed by AI alone,
it wasn’t measuring understanding in the first place.

Here’s what banning AI actually avoids:
Hard questions.
Curriculum redesign.
Rethinking assessment.

And I understand the fear.

Educators are already stretched.
Change feels heavy.
And the pace of AI isn’t slowing down.

But avoidance has a cost.

Because students don’t graduate into a world without AI.
