Our current issue, SAND 29: Cocoon, features art by Lara Koch ℒ𝒜ℛ𝒜 𝒦𝒪𝒞ℋ // ℳℐ𝒩𝒪𝒰 – who joined us at our launch back in May to talk about her practice.

Lara is a Berlin-based multimedia artist whose work follows the quiet laws of decay, metamorphosis, and recomposition. Her kinetic sound sculptures defy gravity and seek the viewer’s touch. In 2025, she was nominated for the Monopol Young Generation Art Award.

If you'd like the chance to have your visual art featured in SAND 30, there's still time to submit! Find out more and send us your work via the link in our bio ✉️

We’ve had an incredible response to our call for submissions and already hit our caps for poetry and prose, though art remains open until 20 July! Over the next few weeks, our editorial team will be digging into the submissions pile to start putting together shortlists, and we can’t wait to find out what your works have in store for us.

In the meantime, here’s a glimpse at what we’ve been reading over the past few weeks as we geared up for making SAND 30  — erie, visceral fiction by Irene Solá translated from Catalan by Mara Faye Lethem, Solmaz Sharif’s sharply political but personal second poetry collection, a rivetingly weird 1970 novella by Muriel Spark, the ingenious debut collection by our late poetry contributor Gboyega Odubanjo, and more:

Poetry
„Adam”-Gboyega Odubanjo
„Look“-Solmaz Sharif
„Customs“-Solmaz Sharif

Fiction
„Piranesi“-Susanna Clarke
„The Safekeep“-Yael Van Der Wouen
„Yesteryear“-Caro Claire Burke
„The Driver’s Seat“-Muriel Spark
„I gave you eyes and you looked toward darkness“-Irene Solá, translated from Catalan by Mara Faye Lethem

Non-Fiction
„Light and Thread“-Han Kang

Hi there, we’ve had some new followers recently and would love to introduce a list of bookstores in Berlin where you can find our English literature and art journal.

We’re so grateful to our stockists partners for putting SAND on their shelves. Often people who stumble across our magazine for the first time in these bookshops turn into our long-time readers – or even contributors!

If you’re in Berlin and didn’t get your hands on SAND 29 yet, head down to any of these beautiful spots. Or find us also at Curious Fox and 🏁 Hundt Hammer Stein!

We're still open for your submissions: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, translations, visual art (and anything in-between!)

Send us your works that push the boundaries of form, message, and voice in fresh and unpredictable ways. Take risks, experiment, and subvert our expectations 💭

We'd advise submitting prose and poetry as early as possible – these genres are capped to manage our volunteer team's workload and may close before 20 July.

Check out our full submissions guidelines and submit via the link in our bio 🔗

SAND 29 is coming soon!

Join us at on 23 May to celebrate its publication with readings and presentations from the issue's Berlin-based contributors: Katarina Gotic Damiani, Dinara Rasuleva & Martina Mackinlay – further performers tba ✨

More info and tickets via the link in our bio, including a special launch ticket/print issue bundle 🔗

SAND 29: COCOON looks for liminal spaces to hide away in: homes, communities, languages, bodies. But while some of these "cocoons" form resilient spaces for resistance and regeneration, others struggle to keep the threats of the outside world at bay...

SAND 29 seals our transition into a slower, roughly yearly publishing schedule to give our volunteer team more time to regroup between issues and fundraise for our independent project. More info to follow about how this will affect submissions and subscriptions. Thank you for your continued support – and see you in May 🪻
