NOTON NOTON – founded by Carsten Nicolai as a small imprint in 1994 – began its activities in 1996 with the release of noto’s “spin”.

NOTON IS A RECORD LABEL FOUNDED IN 1994 BY GERMAN ARTIST AND COMPOSER CARSTEN NICOLAI, CELEBRATED FOR ITS MINIMALIST ELECTRONIC WORKS AND GROUNDBREAKING COLLABORATIONS ACROSS MUSIC AND VISUAL ART. a collaboration with RasterMusic began the same year, and by 1999 the two labels had merged into Raster-Noton. In 2017, NOTON will start working independently again by releasing Alva Noto’s entire back c

atalogue, and the label is currently planning releases for the future too. Ongoing projects and collaborations include: Noto, Alva Noto, Opto (Thomas Knak + Alva Noto), cyclo. NOTON is pleased to announce the release of Alva alva noto's Wave Wave - Sono Obi, a two-track EP born from Carsten Nicolai's 2025 collaboration and exhibition with HOSOO, Kyoto’s historic Nishijin-ori textile studio.

The exhibition features two interrelated works exploring textile and sound. The composition ‘Sono Obi Wave Weave’ captures the rhythm of Hosoo’s looms through video and synchronized electronic sound. The recording ‘Sono Obi Landscape’ transforms electronic music into sonograms, which are interpreted as textile patterns.

For the first time, the complete Xerrox series is brought together in a single edition, featuring newly reMASTER versions of Volumes 1–3 alongside Volumes 4 and 5.

The collection is housed in a meticulously designed slipcase with original artwork by Carsten Nicolai, available both as a standalone piece and in combination with the vinyl and CDs.

First issued in 2009, the second chapter of the Xerrox penthalogy explores digital replication as a compositional method. Source material from Stephen O’Malley, composer Michael Nyman, and excerpts from the 2004 Insen tour with Ryuichi Sakamoto 坂本龍一 are transformed into expansive sonic structures.

Remastered in collaboration with Calix Mastering.
