NOTON – founded by Carsten Nicolai as a small imprint in 1994 – began its activities in 1996 with the release of noto’s “spin”. a collaboration with RasterMusic began the same year, and by 1999 the two labels had merged into Raster-Noton. In 2017, NOTON will start working independently again by releasing Alva Noto’s entire back catalogue, and the label is currently planning releases for the future

too. Ongoing projects and collaborations include: Noto, Alva Noto, Opto (Thomas Knak + Alva Noto), cyclo. (Ryoji Ikeda + Alva Noto), ANBB: Alva Noto + Blixa Bargeld, Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto, Anne-James Chaton + Alva Noto + Andy Moore, ø + Noto.

Pioneers in their own musical approaches, Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto, began their exploration of sound in the evocatively titled V.I.R.U.S. series in 2002.

Over a series of five albums, Vrioon (2002), Insen (2005), Revep (2006), utp_ (2008), and summvs (2011), the duo have explored blending electronic and acoustic sounds into a meditative whole that is at once expressive, breathing and precision-engineered.

On September 24 and 25, alva noto returns to Berlin for a special live performance at Berghain / Panorama Bar, marking his first live show in the city in over five years.

Renowned for his meticulously crafted audiovisual performances, Nicolai will present a set that channels his signature minimalist precision and rhythmic intensity.

The performance will weave together percussive material from HYbr:ID (2021), the UNI series, and selections from PARA, a new body of work exploring evolving sonic patterns and generative structures.

As with all Alva Noto audiovisual performances, the show will be accompanied by large-scale LED visuals. A rare homecoming within one of Berlin’s most iconic spaces.

Xerrox Vol. 5 was an attempt to work on dissolution. I wasn’t initially interested in strong, emotional, melodic aspects. “Xerrox Vol. 5 has a lot to do with farewell,” the artist explains. "Not only the farewell to the series itself, which I’ve nurtured for almost two decades, but also there have been many farewells to people who were close to me. I believe these people are recognizable in the music. It’s a very emotional, personal album.”
