Hitzeflimmern by Liselotte Krieger is beautiful coming of age film that tells us the story of Merle and Lasse who live in a small village in eastern Germany. And it is to this very village that Juli comes every summer from the city. The two of them are like a home to her there, her “friends for as long as she can remember”.
Surrounded by gentle hills and golden fields, the three of them drift through the summer. Just like every year, they thought. But between swimming in the canal, cycling along the d**e and summer boredom, it dawns on them that this year is different. They’ve finished school, ready for the life they’ve dreamed of for so many summers: a shared flat in the city. Yet on their journey into adulthood, they encounter new responsibilities, dreams and expectations that seem to be driving them apart.
No one says it out loud, because even the thought of it weighs heavily, like a stone in the stomach. It is a bittersweet farewell to the weightlessness of their childhood and the feeling of togetherness, perhaps even a farewell to their home.
Come watch this beautiful film with this Wednesday at Z-Bar Berlin.
