Hometown

Hometown A synthesis of thoughts between cultural shapeshifters and unmistakable artists. Hometown is about who we are - as creatives, as humans, as citizens.

It’s where we come from and where we want to be going. Hometown investigates the work of passionate creators all over the globe, as a reflection of today’s constantly evolving zeitgeist. By digging deep into the complex dynamics of modern-day systems and their functions, we hope to reach the core of each topic, and collectively discover new possibilities for change.

Many people have recently found their way (home) onto our platform here because of our films but only a few know that we also publish a print magazine under the same title ‘Hometown Journal’.

A few days ago our new issue EP4 — The Way Home — a small batch magazine made slowly, came out and it is a philosophical quest, a creative search, a wandering and a wondering by over 20 artists from around the globe on more than 340 pages. Together we open the door, play, listen and learn. This issue carries the spirit or remembering showing us where we come from and where we are going.

This book has been a collective effort, has been shaped at our kitchen tables and is touched by our own hands. So it would mean the world to us, if you journeyed with us. Every purchase helps to keep our independent art journalism alive and supports us in making future films and magazines. Find more details via the link in our bio.

Discounts are available for emerging artists on a tight budget, students, friends and family. just DM us :)

A coffee with artist ☕️ now available to watch in full length on our YouTube channel.

Born in Essex to immigrant parents from Beijing, Kelly Wu works across sculpture, installation, and performance. Their practice explores memory and culture through found objects and personal archives, often touching on race, gender, and class—though these themes are deliberately withheld or obscured. Writing and life-art performances extend and complicate these ideas, blurring the lines between art and everyday life.

We met Kelly last October in L’Angelo Cafe in London for a quick chat over eggs and coffee before Kelly went off to work. We hope you enjoy this new format of films, where we meet someone casually, drink coffee and talk.

As the year winds down and the evenings grow slower, “The Way Home” is coming to Vienna. Together with our friends at , we’re gathering at for a cozy evening of drinks, music, and pages worth getting lost in.

Join us on November 27, from 6–10PM, to flip through our freshly printed art magazine — or book, as we like to call it — and spend time with friends, family, and fellow book lovers.

“The Way Home” brings together 22 artists from around the world on more than 340 pages — including Jack Bool, Sulah Jordan, Mark Sommerfeld, Alva Le Febvre, and many others — and was born from two and a half years of collective work and a shared belief in independent publishing.

Come celebrate with us, as the door stands wide open.

Jana Gerberding photographs Lucas Krzikalla for the first issue of the Portraiture series—a magazine dedicated to showcasing the work of visual artists in combination with their subjects, giving them a platform to tell their stories through words and imagery.

Heteronormative masculinity is still deeply rooted in professional sports, and homosexuality remains taboo in male team sports. Lucas broke this taboo. With his public coming out, he became the first openly gay active professional athlete in German team sports—a step that made him visible, but also vulnerable.
How do you capture this moment photographically? How do you show a person whose body is trained for performance and strength, but who also carries an inner vulnerability?

This portrait series deliberately avoids staging and instead focuses on the body as a vehicle for identity. It is about the encounter with Lucas—his expression, his posture, his presence.
