Katerina Valdivia Bruch's article on the current Berlin Biennale:

The 13th Berlin Biennale: “I don’t care what you think, I will exhibit it anyway”

For whom are the biennales? For the curator and her or his artists’ friends, or for a broader audience? Why is the lack of communication and illegibility confounded with something ‘profound’ in the art world? These and other thoughts were running through my mind while I was visiting the opening of the 13th Berlin Biennale.

Tomorrow starts documenta fifteen, directed by ruangrupa, an artist collective Katerina Valdivia Bruch had the pleasure to meet in 2009 for the first time.
This documenta follows the spirit of the 1960s-1970s, in which there was the aim to blur the differences between art with life, and stresses the values of friendship, solidarity and care (taking care of nature and of people). The majority of participating artists are collectives with processed-based approaches, engaging the participation of the audience.
From her experience in Indonesia, she can tell that it will be more like a party, a place to hang out with friends and to exchange ideas. This is how she remembers the events they organised in Jakarta, for instance the Jakarta Biennale or the OK. Video Festival that she was able to attend.
End of 2019 she interviewed Farid Rakun, one of the members of the collective (the interview was published some months later in 2020). It was before the pandemic started. A lot has happened since then and we are curious to visit the show in the coming days.

A year ago we started with Rethinking Conceptualism's symposium sessions, organised in eight online meetings with 17 speakers. We would like to express our gratitude to all the participants in the symposium, as well as to our guests during the online reading sessions we began in May 2020. Our gratitude goes also to our moderators and our audience, who made the first part of the project possible.
This year, we have taken a longer break and will come back with our online activities in May. And, if there are no further changes due to the turbulent moments we are currently living, we will host an in presence event in the last quarter of this year.
Thanks for all these enriching moments and exchange of ideas. Let’s continue with our conversations.
We will meet again online in May. Stay tuned for more news!
