Be.longings — Happy Housing Tactics:

Doors that multiply? A home tied shut with a knot? An invitation to enter — or to leave?

At HKW for Be.longings, part of “And Now?! The Youth Housing Congress for Berlin”, where young voices take centre stage to rethink housing, belonging, and community. Developed by the Culture and Media Management program at Freie Universität Berlin and metaLAB(at)Berlin, in collaboration with metaLAB(at)Basel and .cc

“Every mirror in a home is a small cosmos, where the body rehearses its existence and learns to become an image of itself.” — Emanuele Coccia, Philosophy of the Home (2023)

Be.longings — Happy Housing Tactics:

Where does reflection live? What do we keep, fold away, or carry from place to place?

Sketches of illustrations by Joni Marriott, growing out of collective research for Be.longings, a workshop that asks how housing connects to emotion, identity, and care. Developed by metaLAB and continent. with students from Freie Universität Berlin. One of several creative workshops at HKW’s “And Now?!” Youth Housing Congress for Berlin — alongside mapping, printing, and poetry — this session invites participants to draw, write, and imagine futures of living that are affordable, shared, and alive.

“To inhabit means to digest: to make the world part of our own substance. Cooking is the alchemy through which the outside becomes us.” — Emanuele Coccia, Philosophy of the Home (2023)

Be.longings — Happy Housing Tactics:

A cup that overflows? A hallway that becomes a pool? Rooms that stretch and breathe like living things?

Part of “And Now?! The Youth Housing Congress for Berlin” at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) — a one-day festival where young people imagine new ways of living, together. Be.longings is our contribution: a workshop and installation about what makes a space feel like home, created with students of the Culture and Media Management program at Freie Universität Berlin, in collaboration with metaLAB(at)Berlin&Basel, and continent.

“The threshold is not a border; it is a zone of transformation, where the world becomes intimate and intimacy becomes world.” — Emanuele Coccia, Philosophy of the Home (2023)

🦢what shall we do, together?

In 2025, we revisit the tradition of the Wayzgoose, inviting and opening a space to think through and enact processional publishing—a space where publishing becomes a practice of care, work, solidarity; a transformation of self, community and ideas. ✨

📚 publishing (as) process

Publishing has always been more than just creating books, articles, or journals. It’s about how we collaborate and create—about the relationships, the care, the solidarity and friendships that emerge around the supposed ‘products’ of activities. What would a processional publishing, that honours, values and supports this, feel like, look like, be like?

Join us in 2025 as we embrace the ritual nature of publishing—evolving, transformative, magic acts that bring people together in drawing one another toward creation, and new openings to speak to and through one another. ✨

🌿traditions of transhistorical cultural labours

What is a Wayzgoose? Historically, it was a day of feasting, community, and creativity for printers, a rare moment to step away from the grind and celebrate their craft. Proto-precarious labourers, solitary amongst cultural producers, seeing one another outside the otherwise more solitary contexts of their work and lives.

In 2025, we revive this tradition, again. Together, we’ll explore what it means to publish with care, community, and transformation in mind. ✨

.cc is an experiment in collective public-making, a slow-media platform exploring the notion of détente. continent. opens and examines, transforms and affects contemporary conditions of creative labour and critical love in philosophy, media, art, science, thought, politics and planetary ecologies. continent. produces events, series, special editions, and experimental and research-driven publications, carefully, purposefully infrequently and somewhat irregularly. At time of writing the group comprises Jamie Allen, Paul Boshears, Mela DávilaFreire, Catarina de Almeida Brito, Niklas Egberts, Alicia Escobio, Mayssa Fattouh, Brendan Howell, Nina Jäger, Rebekka Kiesewetter, Maxime Le Calvé, Isaac Linder, Anna-Luise Lorenz, Maite Muñoz, Abbéy Odunlami, Paula Vélez Bravo and Elvia Wilk, with varying degrees of engagement and through their various interests and perspectives.

Over its more than ten-year continuation, continent. has been… a public-making partner in the Anthropocene Curriculum projects of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt(for example, through the Temporary continent. project along the Mississippi River)... an invited special guests for physical book-hacking sessions for the R3pair Volume special issue derived through The Maintainers conference in New Jersey, U.S.A.… a contributor to public tour projects at documenta14 in Athens. .cc has also initiated reading and discussion communities around topics relating to reproductive labour, motherhood and creative production with friends at L’Automatica, Barcelona… and developed events and collections on how friendship can be a model and misgiving in collectivised cultural production.
cc is supported by the Dorothea Schlegel Artist-in-Residence at the Research Area 4: "Literary Currencies" (March–July 2024) of the project.

Each picnic blanket installed on July 4th, is a topical tapestry, a locus for critical thematics in publishing, value and circulation. Thematics will be addressed by each topical picnic through objects, foods, textures, graphics and texts, arranged and open to participatory intervention by the public in attendance. Picnickers are also able to contribute their own comments, references and excerpts across the topology of the lawn, creating a collective, idiosyncratic and individualized publication/edition.

Each tapis/tapestry is the locus of a critical thematic in publishing and circulation, critical cultural production and creative public-making experiments in globalized, literary and media culture. Amongst points of departure for this topoi of public/domestic individual/collective negotiations is the famed, and much derived from, 1977 documentary film “The Powers of Ten” written and directed by Charles and Ray Eames (a beautifully terrible document of telescopic power and scientific mastery that conspires to publish the whole of human knowledge through the visual contrivance of the ‘zoom’.)

.cc participates in the residency programme of the Temporal Communities cluster of excellence project in convening "Raw Materials: What We Bring to the Table.”

We have explored relationship between meals and publishing, highlighting how these are both social and integrative acts, as well as potentially transformative, critical and no doubt creative acts. At the Literature Colloquium Berlin (.berlin) now develops “Topical Topoi, A Raw Material Picnic” which involves collective encounters, reading and snacking groups, for a very special issue and edition from .cc

The LCB project blurs the lines between raw and cooked, messy and refined, developing aspects of ‘metabolic publishing’, as topology, topics, topoi and tapis. For the Annual Conference Literary Value in July 2024 we ask after conflicts and contradictions, who and what is served in the act of (globalized?) publishing. We do so through a series of topical picnic blankets, installed on the majestic lawn of the historic Literarisches Colloquium Berlin villa on the Großer Wannsee.

continent., an online publication and experimental publishing collective that started in 2011, recently went on a bit of a break. This deeply cared for collective entity begins, again, with a call for pauses.

Maybe this need for portentous openings have always been with us? The name continent. has since its inception been punctuated with a trailing period; a full stop: ‘.’ It is here that continent. ends/begins. Like an awareness of the perfect moment, stasis never really arrives, détentes must come to an end (or a beginning).

In slowing to pause, we regain composure that allows for new compositions: of our past archives, of friends and co-conspirators, of our mode of working at public-making and making publics, conceiving of events, and other modes of experimentation. Détente instills new habits—of hanging back and of taking breathers; new rituals of moderation, deliberation, and understanding.

On our website (link in bio), published works in text and other media will appear, but this appearance will accompany a sense of the intervals of time and durational consideration, or care, that precipitates the work or love presented. In our archives section you will find all the materials from prior issues, events, collaborations and activities.

continent. continues to initiate and collaborate with friends, communities, institutions, and cultural programs, particularly those who understand the pregnant hopefulness and refuge of the slow start, a pensive project, a preserving pause. Our intent is to introduce into these activities a new softer rhythm that aligns with the motivations of an experimental public-making project that is unhurried and resolutely grounded. Amongst us, there are those who have been inspired by the motivations of the slow movement, including slow-media and web practices and calmer technologies—which call forth subtle, supple, adaptable collective ways of engaging, working, publishing, creating and thinking together.

continent. shall be understanding, variable, lenient and respectful of the available attentions and timings of continent.’s generous constellation of maintaining publics, practitioners, collaborators, critics and confidantes.

In response to rushes, pressure and crisis, we ask for resistance and respite, reconstituting around the idea of détente.

Détente—as a rest, pause or penultimate repose that occurs, creates and accommodates. Détente, as a stirring of the broth between cultivation and consummation. Détente, as the gap between inhale and exhale that precedes dialogue. Détente, as the snap! of the clapperboard, used in film to realign and integrate picture and sound, intention and action. Détente as the glint of a flashbulb, followed by the high-pitched whine of recharging capacitor. Détente, a break between the word and the thing, revealing the animacy of both. Détente, as the terse, pregnant jubilance between a joke and its punchline. Détente, a becoming, the latent potential of the present moment. Détente, an open invitation to begin, always again, and always together, to tell many other intimate stories of, with, and on this planet.

If any of this gives you pause, please, do get in touch. We would love to understand how others might also become part of this new firmament, the renewed constellation that is continent. [email protected]

And so, finally, here we are, at the beginning of a whole new era.
The start of a brand new world.
And now what?
How do we start?
How do we begin again?
– Laurie Anderson
