A busker is a person who sings or plays music (for money) in streets and other public areas. Nowadays we call them buskers but up until the 20th century buskers were known as 'minstrels' in English-speaking countries. In medieval France they were commonly called 'jongleurs' and 'troubadours'. It was in 1665 that the verb 'to busk' first appeared in the English language. However, at this time, it w

as used as a nautical term meaning 'to cruise around, tackling with the wind'. The word probably originates from the Spanish verb 'buscar', which means 'to seek'. By 1734 this is the definition that was more widely used for the verb 'to busk' in the English language too. Today, buskers around the world are still seeking something; an audience, fame, fortune. The meaning of the verb 'to busk' may have evolved over the centuries but in a way the old nautical definition, 'cruising around, tackling with the wind', still aptly describes the bohemian, vagabond lifestyle of the modern day busker.

Wow, how cool! Click, click, click and help our busker Teresa get back to her homeland as part of a global street band!

I'm a Kiwi girl from Wellington who's been playing guitar and singing in Berlin the past 7 years. My music is a mix of folk-funk and jazz. I love funky percussive rhythms and experimenting with my voice. I play a good 50 shows a year all over Europe... plus the street.

Yesterday we enjoyed a lovely silent busking concert by Sfog in the streets of Amsterdam. What a great idea to surprise people with a secret gig through the use of head phones!!
