In September, Dutch National Ballet opened its 2025–2026 season with a powerful triple bill at the Main Stage – an empowerment of gay pride and q***r identity: “Monument for a Dead Boy” by Rudi van Dantzig, “7th Symphony” by Toer van Schayk, and the world premiere of “IN FLUX” by Juanjo Arqués – who is one of the most talented choreographers of his generation. So we will review this new work as a “Backlight” in November – and congratulate Anna Ol who received the Alexandra Radius Prize after the premiere, underscoring a commitment to excellence and innovation in Dutch dance.

Another loss of a true legend, news spread by a message from Opéra de Paris: Aged 80 years, the choreographer Patrice Bart, first Étoile dancer, later Ballet Master who had dedicated 54 years of his life to the Opéra passed away.
He was a pivotal figure and an inspiration for generations of dancers, bringing passion, vitality, and technical rigor to the stage and the studio. He worked and revived the classics also for companies in Germany and will be remembered as a real grand seigneur.
Tonight´s performance of “Giselle” at the Palais Garnier has been dedicated to his memory. Last words from the Opera: “Thank you for your immense legacy, Maestro. Rest in peace.”

Another interesting experiment at tanz kassel premiered Friday, this time in Fridericianum: “Season 5: Let’s Talk About Blossom and Decay” by Robozee delves into the powerful themes of change, renewal, and the transience of life. Audiences are invited to reflect on how moments of beauty and decline shape our perception of existence. Obviously a thrilling experience – and we will report on Robozee aka Christian Zacharias, leading figure of German Hip-Hop scene. A crossover between street and stage, more performances to come.

Good for Brussels, sad for Hamburg: Corinna Humuza (photo: © Djenna Wehenpohl) is moving from the Hanseatic city to the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, which she will direct together with Silvia Bottiroli starting in January next year. Humuza was previously curator of the International Summer Festival Hamburg, which is attached to the Kampnagel cultural center, and brought a perspective that festival director András Siebold couldn't offer due to his background: female, Black, young. Accordingly, Siebold commented on his curator's change somewhat tightly: "From the perspective of the summer festival, this selection is also an honor for Corinna's work (...) and demonstrates the international relevance of this festival." Humuza, on the other hand, emphasizes how much she appreciated the work in Hamburg, saying that the summer festival proves "how festivals can function as laboratories for the present and future." He continued: "With great gratitude for this, I am now delighted to continue the international relevance and artistic standard of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts together with Silvia Bottiroli and to further expand its openness, reach, and diversity."

Krysztof Pastor's "Prometheus" is on view at Warsaw's Teatr Wielki until October 5th. Our critic was enthusiastic, calling it a "theatrical coup." He also expressed concern that Pastor would be bidding farewell to the company he has led for 16 years with this impressive work, although he admits: "That would be regrettable. But 'Prometheus' would be a truly honorable farewell piece." (Photos: © Ewa Krasucka)

Gudrun Schretzmeier has passed away. The costume and set designer died last Sunday night at the age of 84. In 1984, Schretzmeier co-founded the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, home of the nationally acclaimed dance company Gauthier Dance, with her husband Werner Schretzmeier and Peter Grohmann. In addition to her management role, she was also repeatedly involved in artistic work, designing the sets for the Gauthier Dance productions "Lucky Seven - Carlito" (2011), "King Lear" (2020), "Swan Lakes" (2021), and "Seven Sins" (2021). Last summer's tanz yearbook explicitly praised her costume design for "FireWorks" (2024): "Gauthier Dance, based at the Stuttgart Theaterhaus, impressed with Shori Yamamoto, Bruna Andrade, and Gudrun Schretzmeier's costumes for 'FireWorks' and as a company," it stated. Werner Schretzmeier on his wife: "It would be important to her that we not perish in mourning. In this spirit, she would wish that we all continue to shape the future positively and actively, and that the people at the Theaterhaus continue to shine, month after month, year after year." Anyone who missed the past performances in Münster and Mülheim has one last chance to admire the idiosyncratic company CocoonDance this evening – Rafaële Giovanola's choreography "Choreia – a Polyballet" will be shown at the Fabrik Herder in Krefeld. And for the last time for a while: The evening won't be performed again until November 26th at Regensburg’s Tanztage. Which would be a shame, because our critic was very enthusiastic: "The artificial bodies that this genuine choreographer creates – figures somewhere between human and insect, plant, avatar, or machine – sometimes border on magic: beings that move in ways you've never seen before." (Photos: © Noé Grange)

Important information: Today‘s show has to be cancelled.
