Let's continue with the results of our yearbook survey: «companies in focus» are companies, mentioned several times and in different ways. Let´s begin with the Stuttgart Ballet, whose dancers Miriam Kacerova, Carlos Strasser, Mackenzie Brown and Henrik Erikson stood out - as did the ensemble in Joachim A. Lang's movie «Cranko». Congratulations!
© Stuttgarter Ballett (Schwanensee)/ Roman Novitzky - #2+3 Miriam Kacerova (Adagio Hammerklavier), #4+5 MacKenzie Brown (Romeo und Julia, with Henrik Erikson), #6+7 Henrik Erikson (Dornröschen), #6+7 Carlos Strasser (Der kleine Prinz)

… and the winner is: Marcos Morau. Once again he is «Choreographer of the Year», has impressed with productions such as «Totentanz» (with his company La Veronal), «Afanador» (with Ballet Nacional de España) and «Notte Morricone» (Fondazione Aterballetto). Morau is «Artist in Residence» at Nederlands Dans Theater, Triennale di Milano and Staatsballett Berlin – in Berlin he will have a full-length premiere «Wunderkammer» this fall. Tribute by Maria Luisa Buzzi in the yearbook: «His unique, distinctive style of theatre is free of self-indulgence yet able to connect powerfully even with a broader general audience. He is less concerned with the salvation of humanity than with transfiguring the present with his all-encompassing creativity, taking surrealistic inspiration from the irrational subconscious mind and suspending conscious reason and logic within the realm of his art.» Congratulations!

“Borda” is more than a performance — it’s a living archive of Lia Rodrigues’ radical legacy.
The Brazilian choreographer stitches together 35 years of costumes, politics, and memory in this intimate, powerful work presented at “Tanz im August” in Berlin.

From heirloom baby dolls to plastic tarps and legendary “May B” garments, everything in “Borda” carries a story — of resistance, reinvention, and joy.

You can still catch “Borda” at Haus der Berliner Festspiele on 27 and 28 August.

Here is: our second «Highlight 2025»  Staatsballett Berlin! In the yearbook survey covering the 25/26 season it was mentioned nine times: dancers such as Leroy Mokgatle, Jan Casier and Anthony T***e, stage design and costumes – and above all: the whole company! In her tribute, Michaela Schlagenwerth writes: «Christian Spuck and the Staatsballett Berlin, which he directs, virtually rush from one success and honor to the next». With good reason: «Every production was excellently chosen and just as excellently programmed.» Congratulations! By the way, the next post also has to do with the Staatsballett ... don't miss it.

Bayerisches Staatsballett» is our first «Highlight 2025»: In the yearbook survey covering the 25/26 season it received ten votes - proof of its excellence. Dancers such as Ksenia Shevtsova and Jakob Feyferlik, Carollina Bastos, Maria Baranova, Margarita Fernandes, António Casalinho .... are celebrated. Also the conductor Andrew Litton and – above all – the company as a whole! The written tribute says: «Munich shines - a great ensemble and a repertoire ranging from Pina Bausch to John Neumeier». Congratulations!

… today is the day we have been working for… quite a while… our yearbook 2025 is available, printed as well as online (international edition) – and this is what it´s about: All Is Flux: Exploring “Flow” in Dance
Divided in three parts we examine “Flow”, “Barriers” and “Balance”: Amid a political and global climate trending toward hardening, polarization, and withdrawal, the dance yearbook “Flow” examines flow phenomena under aesthetical, social, economic and professional aspects. What happens when the current of life stalls or even breaks off? When dancers head for burnout or career’s end, when funding dries up? Is sponsorship a realistic option? Can diversity remain firmly rooted in everyday ensemble life, and is active aging—think Mikhail Baryshnikov or Pina Bausch’s original cast in “Kontakthof” —truly unproblematic? When do ensembles fall into a rapturous “flow,” and what does it have to do with waltz and Butoh, with non-binary identity, and with FKA twigs’s EUSEXUA tour, Semperoper?
Featuring contributions by Osiel Gouneo, Ohad Naharin, Olga Esina and Martin Schläpfer; an essay by former State Minister for Culture Monika Grütters – and further statements by dancers and choreographers Bruna Andrade, Bridget Breiner, Annett Göhre, Kinsun Chan, Miriam Kacerova, Matteo Miccini, Soyoka Iwata, Long Zou, Valbona Bushkola and Louis Stiens
And of course… we present the season’s highlights, plus:
• Our international critics’ survey: the best of the 2024/25 season, votes from 36 international critics
• Reports from dance hot spots
• Brief profiles of this season’s trends and trendsetters
• The winner of our Lifetime Achievement Award
All winners are presented in the upcoming days, be a little patient please…

Billy Shebar's documentary "Monk in Pieces" about vocal performer Meredith Monk opens in German cinemas on Thursday. It's a must-see for dance enthusiasts, not only because Monk was part of the genre-busting New York avant-garde scene in the 1970s, from Merce Cunningham to Philip Glass to Björk and David Byrne. Shebar's "adorably puzzle-like film portrait" (according to our critic) is also worthwhile as a work of cinematic art: "This homage, which transforms vocal acrobatics and iconic stage moments into congenial documentary art, is a must-see." What has most moved the dance world in recent months? The controversy at the Hamburg Ballet is at the forefront. At the beginning of the season, one could actually still be optimistic about the company's future: When Demis Volpi presented his choreography "The Thing with Feathers" in the multi-part evening "The Times Are Racing" (photos: © Kiran West) in the gloomy autumn, it seemed to promise a bright future in Hamburg. But what exactly happened next? We trace the chronology of events in our international edition: https://www.der-theaterverlag.de/tanz-international/magazine/tanz-international-edition-0825/behind-the-scenes-the-hamburg-ballett-lies-in-ruins/

The first week of this year's "Tanz im August" festival in Berlin is coming to an end. Today, there's another opportunity to see Adam Linder's "Kaleidoskope." Also on the program: Nora Chipaumire's "Dambudzo," billed as a "house of sound, sculpture, and live performance that invites reflection on freedom and colonialism." Only four more days until the Kunstfest Weimar begins – this year under the motto "Live Courageously," which is undoubtedly good advice, especially for culture in East Germany, in times of growing threat from right-wing extremism. From August 20 to September 7, the festival will be living courageously, including "Genesis – The Beginning and End of Time" by Gregory Maqoma (photos: © Arthur Dlamini).

The Zurich Theaterspektakel opened yesterday evening, featuring "umuko" by Dorothée Munyaneza (photo: © Patrick Berger, running until August 16). Works by Lea Moro, Boris Charmatz, and Baro d'evel, among others, can be seen in Switzerland's largest city until August 31, making a visit to Lake Zurich definitely worthwhile, even regardless of the scenic landscape.
