Easter is over. But we still fondly remember the Hamburg Ballet's performances of John Neumeier's "St. Matthew Passion" on Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday—featuring a stunning Aleix Martínez as Jesus. And now: on with the daily routine! (Photos: Kiran West)

The cover of our April issue features a photo of model and burlesque performer Pansy St. Battie (Photo: Xenia Curdova, © Pansy St. Battie), on view until October 26th in the worthwhile exhibition "Glitter" at the Hamburg Museum of Arts and Crafts. It showcases the sweet allure of glitter, a mixture of tiny, reflective plastic, glass, and metal particles, often mixed with paint, industrially produced since 1934, and now an ecological problem as microplastics. The exhibition is charming, seductive, sexy, and playful – featuring pieces such as Lorenzo Triburgo's and Sarah van Dyck's "Venus" (from the series "ShimmerShimmer," 2020 © Lorenzo Triburgo and Sarah van Dyck) and parts of Quil Lemons' "Glitterboy" series (2017, © Quil Lemons).

On Easter, people focus on passion stories, including dance. Sasha Waltz choreographed Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. John Passion" for the Salzburg Easter Festival a year ago, and thankfully, the television channel arte has preserved the evening. And this year, it's making it accessible to the public: Since yesterday, "St. John Passion" has been available in the media library, available until May 25 (https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/119415-000-A/sasha-waltz-bachs-johannes-passion/). Those who don't want to watch the production online can also enjoy it late at night on analog television on April 28. (Photo: © Ozango)

A sense of shifting – and shaping. 🌈
In our latest issue, writer and curator Thaddäus Maria Jungmann explores how q***r artists redefine movement as resistance, as revelation, as radical tenderness.

✨ From underground balls to institutional stages: this is q***rness in motion.
🧠 Insightful, bold, and deeply embodied.

Tomorrow the red carpet will be rolled out in Augsburg: an international line-up of stars at the ballet gala, once again a highlight organized by ballet director Ricardo Fernando and Carla Silva. The young ballerina on our photos comes from Stuttgart - MacKenzie Brown - © Stuttgarter Ballett, in «Einssein» by Mauro Bigonzetti, in «Nachtmerrie» by Marco Goecke with Henrik Erikson, and in Marcia Haydée's «Sleeping Beauty». Adhonay Soares da Silva will be her partner. Also arriving: Polina Semionova and Dmitry Semionov (Staatsballett Berlin and others), Yasmine Naghdi and Reece Clarke from Royal Ballet London, Danseuse Étoile Sae Eun Park from the Paris Opera, who will dance together with Denys Cherevychko… Bianca Teixeira and Lorenzo Alberti from the Semperoper Dresden Ballet will be performing - and of course the Augsburg State Theatre Ballet will be shining, partly with its own creations. If that's not Easter splendour, what is? Have a wonderful festive season!

Happy 80th birthday to choreographer Mats Ek: It would be hard to imagine a stage without the works of Mats Ek. His choreographies, which he has created over the course of a long life and which will hopefully continue to be created, are unmistakable. Not only his versions of the classics from «Giselle» to «Sleeping Beauty» but all of his works… Congratulations!! We show the master himself (© Morgan Norman) as well as pics from Operá de Paris - «Soirée Ek» - (© Ann Ray) with «Boléro» and «Carmen».
You can read the full congratulation for free on our website.

Two choreographic worlds, one stage.
Yoann Bourgeois and Hofesh Shechter meet in "Beyond" at Konzert und Theater St. Gallen – and raise the question: what can dance still uncover? Floating, pulsing, fierce and fluid.

In “Specky Clark”, Oona Doherty combines family saga with Gaelic mythology. The interfaces between the real world and the imagination, between male and female, between legend and history, between dance and theater are what make “Specky Clark” so provocative.

«Wings of Memory» is the name of the phantastic triple bill shown once again today and tomorrow at the Bavarian State Ballet's festival week - Jiri Kyliàn's «Bella Figura»( # 2, 4), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's «Faun» ( #3) and - a real hit - Pina Bausch's «Sacre» ( #1, 5). The principals, the soloists, the demi-soloists – all Munich ballet dancers are magnificent, but only.... six times. What a pity.

Today in Munich - Ballettfestwoche, with a guest performance of «Lost Letters» by the magnificent Lucia Lacarra, who once was celebrated at the Nationaltheater as iconic ballerina of Bavarian State Ballet. And today? She is the celebrated producer of her own label and choreographies, which her partner Matthew Golding makes for and dances with her. The two of them have found each other and Munich: celebrates!

We live in a world of change. It's reassuring that some things remain the same. Take, for example, the management of tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf: As announced by the board of the sponsoring association, the contract of artistic director Ingrida Gerbutavičiūtė has been extended for another four years until June 30, 2030. The Lithuanian dramaturge and curator has been at the helm of tanzhaus nrw since the 2022/23 season. "Ingrida Gerbutavičiūtė has successfully developed tanzhaus nrw as a cultural and educational institution in Düsseldorf and internationally," emphasizes association chairman Johannes Kurschildgen. "Dance contributes significantly to strengthening integration and social coherence," says Gerbutavičiūtė. "With enthusiasm and vigor, I will steer this internationally renowned dance institution into the future in close cooperation with our team, artists, teachers, and our visitors." Neapolitan choreographer Adriano Bolognino is one of the most promising newcomers on the international dance scene. Since his initial successes and an invitation to the 2020 Biennale Danza, he has been able to develop an increasingly extensive repertoire, with dance that doesn't seem commercial, but rather has a barb, addresses migration issues, or blurs gender conventions. If you'd like to learn more about the now 30-year-old, we publish a profile of Bolognino in our current issue (and also refer to our English-language edition, which is even free to read this month: https://www.der-theaterverlag.de/tanz-international/magazine/tanz-international-edition-0425/at-a-glance-side-steps-april-2025/). His work can also be seen on stage, for example, yesterday in "Como Neve" in Padua at Prospettiva Danza Teatro. (Photo: Francesco Aurisicchio)

Sad news from Hamburg: Important members of the Hamburg Ballet will be leaving the company at the end of the season. Namely, Principal Dancers Alexandr Trusch, Christopher Evans, Madoka Sugai, Alessandro Frola, and Jacopo Bellussi. Artistic Director Demis Volpi had already announced Sugai and Frola's departure at the press conference in early March, but the departure of Trusch, Evans, and Bellussi turns the painful loss into a bloodletting that can no longer be explained by the natural fluctuation in an ensemble. "Each of them has contributed to the international reputation of the Hamburg Ballet over the years with passion and exceptional talent," Volpi said in a statement. "I would like to thank them sincerely for their dedication and tireless commitment and wish them continued success and inspiration in their future artistic endeavors." Who will take their places? Uncertain.
The photos show Jacopo Bellussi in "Sleeping Beauty", Alessandro Frola and Madoka Sugai in "The Lady of the Camellias", Alexandr Trusch in "Odyssey" and Christopher Evans (with Anna Laudere) in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (all photos: © Kiran West).

What a wonderfully funny photo! And what a gathering of great representatives of the artistic avant-garde, across all art genres! Carolyn Brown, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Doris Stockhausen, David Tudor, Michael von Biel, Steve Paxton, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Robert Rauschenberg are pictured on the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's world tour in 1964, and this image alone demonstrates how undogmatic art was conceived at the time. Munich's Museum Brandhorst is showing how Cunningham, Cage, and Rauschenberg, together with Jasper Johns and Cy Twombly, who is very present in the museum's collection, turned the art world upside down, from tomorrow until August 17th under the title "Five Friends."
