How do AI and journalism intersect? 🤖 What tools can journalists leverage to navigate this rapidly evolving field, and what ethical questions should they ask along the way?

These are some of the questions explored at the MiCT Autumn School on Journalism and Artificial Intelligence in Berlin, joined by 12 Ukrainian fellows 🇺🇦 from the Fellowship for Critical Voices.

Over the course of the week, participants explored newsroom innovation, visited leading German media outlets, and attended major international events such as the Berlin Freedom Conference, all while discovering the cultural energy of Berlin.

The Fellowship for Critical Voices is a project by MiCT to support journalists in conflict-affected areas, in Ukraine, the project is implemented in partnership with Media Development Foundation. The project is part of the and is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

📣 The deadline for applications has been extended for the call dedicated to regional journalists and content creators, launched under the project “Beyond Chișinău: Politically Contested Regions Under the Spotlight”, implemented by the German organization Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) with the support of GIZ Moldova and the German Federal Foreign Office.

✅ The list of eligible regions has been expanded!
Journalists and content creators from the following districts are now eligible to apply: Cahul, Cantemir, Leova, Cimișlia, Fălești, Sîngerei, Florești, Soroca, Căușeni, Ștefan Vodă, Drochia, Edineț, Bălți, Basarabeasca, Taraclia, as well as Orhei, Ungheni, and Criuleni.

To strengthen regional media and bring local voices from across the country into the spotlight, the project offers a grant of up to 700 Euro.

Behind the work: reporting from the forests of war

What happens when survival collides with sustainability? Fellow Yan Naing Aung travelled to Myanmar’s conflict-ridden Chin State to tell a story few dare to pursue: the environmental cost of war.

In the dense hills of Mindat, he met Kee Hone, a self-taught environmentalist who spent decades promoting sustainable farming. But since the military coup, Kee and his community have been forced to return to slash-and-burn agriculture, not out of choice, but desperation.

Yan Naing’s reporting highlights the devastating consequences of war not just for people, but for the planet.

With the support of 𝐆𝐈𝐙 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐨𝐯𝐚, we are launching the project “𝐵𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑠̦𝑖𝑛𝑎̆𝑢: 𝑆𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑜𝑣𝑎’𝑠 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑅𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠.”

This initiative aims to strengthen regional media in the districts of 𝐂𝐚𝐡𝐮𝐥, 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐫, 𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐯𝐚, 𝐂𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬̦𝐥𝐢𝐚, 𝐅𝐚̆𝐥𝐞𝐬̦𝐭𝐢, 𝐒𝐢̂𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐢, 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬̦𝐭𝐢, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐚 and to enhance the capacity of local journalists to produce high-quality, analytical media content.

Between October and December 2025, MiCT will support local journalists and media creators in investigating and analyzing issues where Moldova is particularly vulnerable to ensure that media coverage reflects the real impact on local communities.

👉 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬:
- 20 journalists and online content creators will be selected (with possible extension to Căușeni, Ștefan Vodă, Drochia, Edineț, and Basarabeasca).
- They will be organized into 4 regional groups (North and South).
- With guidance from experienced mentors, each group will investigate a relevant local topic, producing well-researched, community-focused media content that helps counter disinformation.
- The results will be published on the participants’ platforms or outlets.

💡 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚:
- Strong commitment to journalistic ethics
- Experience with investigative/analytical content
- Understanding of disinformation risks
- Active affiliation with a media outlet or independent platform in the listed regions
- Proven experience as a local journalist, influencer, or media content creator

📌 Selected participants will receive a 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 to support their media production under professional mentorship.

🇺🇦 Fellow Daryna Golovan tells the story of Papperova, the first book and coffee shop in Uzhhorod, western Ukraine, opened by Georgiy Moskovets, a psychiatrist displaced by the conflict.

𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞:
- Financial support of up to €5,200
- Tailored expert consultations, addressing needs such as editorial development, audience engagement, business sustainability, and digital tools

𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲:
Applicants should be independent media outlets with a proven record of original, author-driven journalism, established reputation, and active audience engagement.
