What does it really mean to report under threat?

At this year's Global Media Forum in Bonn, MiCT Fellow Seyedeh Fahmideh Hosseini will take the stage for “Behind the story: Journalists under threat” - a powerful live storytelling session featuring voices of exiled and at-risk journalists sharing their realities, challenges, and resilience.

Fahmideh will be joined by Lucía Navas from Nicaragua, Inna Varenytsia from Ukraine and fellow journalists sharing their lived experiences.

Three conflicts. Three journalists. One commitment: protecting press freedom.

This , we highlight just a few of the realities journalists face, from Ukraine to Benin to Afghanistan. Contexts where reporting the facts can lead to intimidation, detention, or worse.
But these are not isolated cases. Across Eastern Europe, West Africa, Central and South Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, journalists continue to work under pressure, navigating censorship, threats, financial constraints, and insecurity.

At MiCT, we stand with journalists who are under threat for doing their job. Because press freedom is not abstract, it is lived, daily, often at a great cost.

April marks three years since the war in Sudan started. Its conflict is etched into everyday life, and these images make it visible.

Through their lenses, Sudanese Fellows document a country suspended between rupture and continuity, where daily life persists, even if lives are uprooted by conflict.

“Working with journalists in war zones means daily contact with people fighting to survive – often displaced, under threat, and on the move with their families. What’s truly remarkable is how they keep reporting, determined to make their voices heard,” shared Rana Akbani, MiCT’s project manager for Middle East and North Africa at the recent in Perugia.

MiCT joined partners of the Hannah Arendt Initiative to reflect on what journalists in exile and at risk need today – from insurance and psychological support to safe working environments, funding, and stronger networks.

Alongside DW Akademie, European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), and JX Fund, the discussion brought together perspectives from different regions and reinforced the importance of coordinated, long-term support for journalists forced to work in exile or under threat.

Mohammad Nazzal grew up in Qalqilya, in the West Bank, inspired by the work of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. What began as admiration, became a professional path that placed him on the front lines of the events he set out to document.

“I found myself working in front of bullets, tear gas and sound bombs. I never retreated, although I was hit several times,” he shares.

In 2025, he became a participant of the , MiCT's protection programme for journalists working in high-risk environments. His photograph ‘Stolen Freedom’ was selected as a finalist for the Open Eye Award 2025.
