The Importance of Reference Tracks in Mixing and Mastering
Reference mixes are of paramount importance in achieving a professional, polished sound. They serve as a crucial guide, helping you maintain clarity, balance, and impact throughout the mixing and mastering process. I’ve often been asked why I reference tracks that aren’t in the genre I’m mixing. The answer is simple—reference tracks aren’t just about matching a genre; they are about ensuring you don’t lose essential elements like depth, width, dynamics, and transients. While referencing a song within your genre is useful for overall tone and energy, using tracks from different styles can highlight areas where your mix might be lacking, offering a fresh perspective on balance and sonic cohesion.

Les and the “one” that started it all.

Les Paul deemed his solid bodied, goldtop electric guitar “Number One” for being the first Gibson Les Paul in existence. This was Paul’s primary guitar in 1951 and 1952, having been used on Les & Mary’s tour of England in 1952 as well as on Les Paul & Mary Ford at Home.

Heavily modded, Les added enlarged pickguards and a Kauffman vibrola in pursuit of a distinctive guitar tone and by 1960 he had performed multiple alternations on the “Number One.”
