CULTURE (POP MUSIC)

Irina Krug (russia)

is a well-known Russian singer in the tradition of chanson, a genre where music is closely tied to personal stories and emotion.
She was born Irina Glazko in 1976 in Chelyabinsk and became publicly known after the death of her husband, the famous chanson singer Mikhail Krug, in 2002. This event shaped how many people first encountered her voice—not simply as a new artist, but as someone carrying a deep personal and cultural memory.
Her early songs, such as “Тебе, моя последняя любовь” and “Перелётная птица”, resonated strongly with audiences because they felt emotionally direct and grounded in lived experience. In Russian chanson, where sincerity and storytelling are central, this connection played an important role in her recognition.
Over time, Irina Krug built an independent career. Songs like “Королева”, “Моя хорошая”, and “Не жалею” show her developing her own lyrical voice, focused on themes of love, strength, and emotional resilience.
Her repertoire combines original material with songs connected to her husband’s legacy and the wider chanson tradition. This blend of memory and present artistic work is part of what makes her a lasting figure in Russian popular music.
Today, Irina Krug is understood both through her personal story and as a continuing presence in a genre where emotion and biography are deeply intertwined.

Eva Quistorp
is a German politician, feminist, and environmental activist, known for her work with the Green movement and her long-standing commitment to human rights and gender equality.

Dorota Pundyk
Bringing Szczecin’s History to Life Through Culture and Community

Dorota Pundyk is a prominent cultural activist, educator, and community organizer in Szczecin whose work bridges the gap between history and contemporary urban life. With a strong focus on the legacy of Johannes Quistorp, she has become a key figure in promoting local heritage and fostering civic engagement through culture.

Promoting Local History and Heritage

Pundyk is widely recognized for her dedication to popularizing the history of Szczecin, particularly the story of the Quistorp family and their influence on the city’s development. Over the years, she has conducted in-depth research and shared her findings through lectures, public presentations, and media contributions. By presenting archival photographs, personal stories, and historical insights, she helps residents see familiar parks, districts, and buildings in a new light. Her involvement in co-creating cultural materials, including a film script about Quistorp, reflects her commitment to making history both accessible and engaging.

Organizing Cultural Events and City Walks

A significant part of Pundyk’s work lies in organizing community-based cultural activities. She leads historical city walks—known locally as spacery miejskie—that guide participants through neighborhoods such as Pogodno, revealing their historical layers and transformations. In addition, she hosts public meetings and storytelling sessions in libraries and local venues, encouraging dialogue and shared memory. Her participation in citywide commemorations ensures that important historical anniversaries are not only remembered but experienced collectively.

Cultural Programming and Artistic Events

Pundyk also contributes to multidisciplinary cultural programming, often collaborating with institutions like the Academy of Art. She has helped organize concerts featuring historical-era compositions, including works by composers such as Emilie Mayer. Her involvement in exhibitions, lectures, and educational initiatives highlights her ability to integrate music, storytelling, and historical context into unified cultural experiences. This approach attracts diverse audiences and enriches Szczecin’s cultural landscape.

Urban Activism and Community Projects

Beyond historical education, Pundyk is actively engaged in shaping the city’s public spaces. She co-initiated projects such as “Zielone Stare Miasto” (Green Old Town), aimed at enhancing urban environments through greenery and community participation. She is also an advocate for the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, including proposals to transform Quistorp’s former villa into a cultural venue. Through clean-up efforts and grassroots initiatives, she demonstrates that caring for heritage also means improving the city’s present-day livability.

Education and Knowledge-Sharing

With a background in teaching, Pundyk places strong emphasis on education. She has led regional educational programs in schools and organized informal learning groups centered on local history and identity. Her work connects generations, encouraging both young people and adults to engage with Szczecin’s past. By blending formal education with community-based learning, she ensures that historical knowledge is widely shared and continuously renewed.

Recognition and Impact

Pundyk’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. She has received local recognition, including nominations in cultural and artistic award categories. More importantly, her impact is visible in the growing public interest in Szczecin’s history and the increased participation in cultural initiatives. Her work exemplifies how grassroots efforts can shape a city’s cultural identity and strengthen community ties.

Katya Kovskaya: WORKS & VISIONS

A Portrait of an Emotional Voice

Katya Kovskaya is emerging as one of the most compelling new voices in contemporary pop. Born in Russia, her sound carries a quiet intensity—balancing emotional depth with a refined, modern edge.

In this issue, we turn to Katya Kovskaya in her own voice—through a series of conversations and performances, with a particular focus on her work in Berlin. We follow her reflections on herself, her art, and the world she moves through.
