Not long ago, many people around the world experienced firsthand how a software glitch can severely disrupt daily life.

Numerous companies in Germany, including operators of critical infrastructures, were affected by one of the largest IT outages of all time when a recent update error crippled around 8.5 million devices.

This underscored the risks associated with our dependence on major tech companies like Microsoft.

The concentration on a few monopolists significantly amplifies the negative impact of any outage. In addition to technical risks like cyberattacks, security and geopolitical considerations also play a role. Imagine if Microsoft decided to stop offering its services in Europe - the consequences would be devastating.

➡ That’s why we advocate for a technologically sovereign Europe, less dependent on big tech giants and fostering greater market diversity.

A pan-European innovation and technology hub could be a solution for building a secure and diverse IT infrastructure, supporting startups, and catching up with tech leaders in Asia and North America. A European technology hub that is ready to manage the risks of digital developments and establish rules to make a technologically sovereign Europe achievable.
