We’re often told that perfectionism is something to overcome. Gene Kelly might have disagreed.

When criticised for his relentless standards, he liked to ask: “Do you go to the sloppy surgeon?”

Behind the apparent effortlessness of “Singin’ in the Rain” was an artist who believed that making something look easy was no excuse for taking it lightly. His lesson feels surprisingly relevant today: care about what you make. Learn to do it properly. And don’t be embarrassed to try very, very hard.

Most people know the name Joseph Pilates. Few know the ballerina who helped preserve his life’s work.

As a young ballet student in New York, Romana Kryzanowska suffered a serious ankle injury. Surgery seemed inevitable, until her teacher, George Balanchine, sent her to Joseph Pilates instead.

Rather than focusing on the injured ankle, Pilates strengthened the rest of her body: her core, posture, balance, and alignment. As her body became stronger, the injury gradually resolved, allowing her to return to dance.

Romana went on to become one of Joseph Pilates’ closest students and, after his death in 1967, dedicated her life to teaching and preserving his method. Much of what is known today as classical Pilates has been passed down through the work of Romana and the generations of instructors she trained.

What makes a performance unforgettable?

For Olga Spessivtseva, it was her extraordinary ability to embody Giselle - the young peasant girl who descends into madness after heartbreak. Her interpretation was so emotionally convincing that audiences often remarked it felt almost too real.

Tragically, life would come to echo art. After years of revolution, exile, and the immense pressures of a ballet career, Spessivtseva developed severe mental illness. She eventually withdrew from the stage and spent much of the rest of her life in psychiatric care, becoming one of ballet’s most gifted (and most tragic) figures.

Today, her legacy reminds us that behind every seemingly effortless performance is a human being, carrying stories the audience may never see.
