35 Years ago, Daniel Frey from Switzerland was one of the three Symphony on Skis pioneers in New Zealand. Now he is the only living member of that memorable expedition. But no one seems to know, who he is and where to find him. All is left, is a picture and a name. Do you have any clue for Carlas quest?
1 August. Happy Schweizer Nationaltag / Swiss National Day! Maybe it's a good day to mention the Swiss mystery in Symphony on Skis.
Daniel Frey, from Switzerland, was the third member of the original Symphony on Skis trio. But his life after the adventure, and his whereabouts today, remain unknown. It was a classic case of his address probably being left on on an errant bit of paper with my parents... and all our attempts so far have failed at finding him! I wonder what my chances are, 35 years later.
Finding the correct Daniel Frey in Switzerland is like finding the correct John Smith in England, or Hans Müller in Germany. I would love to track him down while I am still living in Europe. He'd be the only living original member of the party.
What I know is that he was a student at the time, and after going on a trip with my father, Dad had noticed he was a brilliant skier. He agreed to take him on the Symphony after Daniel agreed to give up smoking! He might have been a medical student (his shirt says "Paraplegiker Stiftung”), and one other item of trivia is that he wove a basket from willow branches as a gift, which we still have today.
In the photo he is in the middle. He might have been about ten years younger than my Dad so in his mid 20s in 1985, making him about 60 today.
Any suggestions for reliable "Personensuche" sites in Switzerland would be appreciated.
