It is an independent, student-led primarily digital magazine that serves as a journalistic platform for the engaged participation of all Hertie students. The Governance Post aspires to uphold four core values: fostering dialogue; promoting diverse perspectives; communicating with transparency and accountability; and upholding journalistic integrity with a commitment to information literacy, develo

pment, and education. Based in the political heart of Berlin, we have the privilege to witness policy-making at its pulse. Throughout history, Berlin has managed to grow and reinvent itself time and time again. A spirited symbol for change, the liberal and multicultural Berlin we see today continually inspires us to understand today, shape tomorrow – four words that set the goal for the Hertie community.

Water is a critical resource, immediately vital for life, and diverse in its applications. But Central Asia has struggled to manage it cooperatively ever since the Soviet Union collapsed. The status quo is that of a ‘quiet instability’, where tensions are present but not always apparent. With new pressures on water emerging, how long until the house of cards collapses?

As one of the worst heatwaves in memory strikes India in these weeks, the absence of a single authoritative UN agency that deals with global climate change is jarring. The establishment of a World Environmental Organisation would represent a powerful and symbolic act, one that would mobilize politics, shift global perceptions, and show that states are truly serious about mitigating climate change.

Western governments and technology platforms have imposed several policy and technical sanctions against Russia. The scale and severity of these sanctions might unintentionally accelerate calls for technology nationalism and undermine global efforts to govern digital and emerging technologies.

The Governance Post team was appalled to hear about the “auctioning” of Muslim women, including many journalists, on a nationalist website in India last month.

In an expressly degrading exercise, women were mock-listed on the website as “for sale” in an attempt to punish and humiliate those who had drawn attention to hate speech in their careers.

One of the journalists put up “for sale” was Fatima Khan, who we had the privilege of hosting last year. At the event, Fatima spoke about the intersection of gender and religion in her work, teaching us about the danger Muslims, particularly Muslim women, face in their careers.

The Governance Post would like to extend its condolences to Fatima and her fellow journalists who were targeted. Despite ongoing misogynistic and Islamophobic attempts to silence them, journalists continue to uphold the values of an open and free press. We greatly admire their courage.

Our latest article by Madhumitha Srinivasamoorthy details Japan's increasing role in the Indo-Pacific region.

The region houses the world’s largest share of the global GDP, trade routes, population, and militaries. Although much attention is paid to the emerging US-China relationship in this region, Japan’s leadership role in the region often goes unnoticed.

Read her analysis here: https://www.thegovernancepost.org/2021/06/vision-indo-pacific-the-japanese-pursuit/

Japan has a strategic interest in the Indo-Pacific and plays an important geopolitical role in the region.
