This Engine Has ZERO Pistons… And It Screams Past 9,000 RPM 🔥🏁
The Mazda 787B didn't sound like a normal race car.
It sounded like a jet.
Instead of pistons, Mazda's legendary Le Mans racer used a 2.6-liter R26B four-rotor rotary engine, capable of revving beyond 9,000 RPM.
And then it made history.
🏆 1991 — 24 Hours of Le Mans
🇯🇵 First Japanese manufacturer to win overall
🔄 One of the most famous rotary-powered race cars ever built
🔥 A four-rotor engine producing its unmistakable high-pitched scream
The 787B's engine note became legendary among racing fans—but the claim that it was banned because of its sound isn't quite right.
Mazda's rotary engine was effectively excluded by changes to Le Mans regulations, which favored piston-engine configurations after the 1991 season.
So the 787B didn't just win Le Mans...
It won with an engine architecture so different that the rulebook eventually changed around it.
Was the 787B the greatest-sounding race car ever? 🎧
