Hello fellow otters - I decided to make a short film about one of the most important films in my decision to become a filmmaker, Peter Weir's 1993 masterpiece 'Fearless.' In my essay I deconstruct the strategies that made this film such an affecting and enduring classic. I was fortunate to be able to integrate excerpts from an interview I did with Rafael Yglesias, the veteran screenwriter who authored both the script and the original novel.
We talked in depth about his near-death experience that became the inspiration for the story, working in Hollywood and as a writer, working with Peter Weir, Roman Polanski and others, how the industry has changed, and why it's more difficult than ever to make a serious film in a deeply unserious business.
