How does paper learn to move?

In 1878 a photographer froze a galloping horse and accidentally started cinema. A century of hand-drawn frames followed — and then screens swallowed them all.

“Something Savage” brings the frames back to paper: Daniel Savage draws his animations one frame at a time, in marker, and every page in the book hides its own motion — point your phone at any artwork in the book and it comes alive.

ALGÆTYPE is available for the whole month of July as a free digital booklet for our newsletter subscribers.

Developed by Luca Bendandi, Algaetype is an experimental photographic printing process using chlorophyll extracted from green algae and seaweed. 🪸

The booklet documents the process from pigment extraction to sunlight exposure, including contact prints, fading images, experiments, and a workshop version combining Algaetype with generative drawing plotted directly onto glass.

First presented at the Experimental Photography Festival Barcelona in 2022 with Pierre Paslier, using a generative drawing tool developed by Julien Gachadoat.
