The 6th issue of PRŌTOCOLLUM, the annually published anthology dedicated to non-Western contemporary visual artists, art narratives and art history, has been released by DICKERSBACH KUNSTVERLAG. PRŌTOCOLLUM’s issue for 2019/20 features contributions by 34 visual artists and art collectives from 32 countries.

Next to its focus on non-Western positions in contemporary art, PRŌTOCOLLUM champions artistic autonomy over editorial sovereignty in order to provide authentic encounters with the presented practices. All contributing artists are invited to independently choose and create their content for PRŌTOCOLLUM without editorial supervision or intervention. This intentional restraint on behalf of the editorial team ensures that no intermediary stands between the artist and the reader. Expert comment and third party evaluation only take place if the artists choose to include such texts with their respective contributions.

With its 6th issue, PRŌTOCOLLUM has chronicled non-Western contemporary visual art for more than half a decade. In this period PRŌTOCOLLUM has developed into an annual anthology that serves as a reference work, a source of inspiration and a database for those who want to fully immerse themselves with established and emerging art of non-Western origin.

Its motto ‘Global Perspectives on Visual Vocabulary’ epitomizes the intention to present a visual arts exhibition in the framework of an art journal, letting the visual flow rather than editorial criteria determine the sequence of the artists’ contributions and layout — undisturbed and uninterrupted by commercial ads or sponsored content. PRŌTOCOLLUM transforms the assembled submissions of a diverse group of contemporary visual artists into an “exhibition in a book”, a visual journey on which each reader embarks by opening the pages of the journal, and a journey that encompasses a wide variety of artistic materials, forms and themes, broadening our horizons beyond the well-trodden paths of Western contemporary art and promoting a new openness for true internationality in the art world.

The fifth issue of PRŌTOCOLLUM, the annually published anthology dedicated to non-Western contemporary visual artists, art narratives and art history, has been released by DICKERSBACH KUNSTVERLAG. PRŌTOCOLLUM’s issue for 2018/19 features contributions by 21 visual artists and art collectives from 22 countries.
To further strengthen regional views and perspectives, PRŌTOCOLLUM has developed its own concept of peer review, by inviting contributors of previous issues to recommend notable artists from their regions. Being able to tap into the knowledge and expertise of such a diverse artistic community puts this journal in a unique position as a platform for non-Western contemporary visual art. Its motto ‘Global Perspectives on Visual Vocabulary’ furthermore epitomizes the intention to present a visual arts exhibition in the framework of an art journal, letting the visual flow rather than editorial criteria determine the sequence of the artists’ contributions and layout — undisturbed and uninterrupted by commercial ads or sponsored content.
Since the inaugural issue, which appeared in October 2014, around 325 artists and artist collectives from over 105 countries have participated in PRŌTOCOLLUM.
The 2018/2019 edition once more brings together emerging talents and established artists from across Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia, lending prominence to art scenes and developments otherwise under-represented in the Western art circuit. A must-have for collectors and professionals interested in a cross-section of contemporary visual art on a truly global scale.
PRŌTOCOLLUM with its editions 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 is recipient of the coveted Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017. The decision was made by a jury of 24 design experts who judged a total of more than 8000 works from 50 countries: http://bit.ly/2ik1OUs
PRŌTOCOLLUM has also been presented with a "Special Award" of the German Design Award 2019, a prize that is awarded by the German Design Council to pioneering contributions to the German and international design landscape.

PRŌTOCOLLUM is an annually published anthology dedicated to non-Western contemporary visual artists, art narratives and art history.

The third issue of the journal is introduced with Vesna Bukovec’s ironic comment ‘Continue as if everything is right’, alluding to the cognitive dissonance that allows us to continue our life as usual in a world that is not only full of social and political injustice, war, terror, mass flight and migration, but also experiencing political reactions to these developments in the form of populism and neo-nationalistic tendencies, which are at least as disturbing as the events that caused them. This introduction sets the tone for PRŌTOCOLLUM 2016/17, which is somewhat more sombre and sadder than the previous editions.

To further strengthen regional views and perspectives, PRŌTOCOLLUM 2016/17 continues to develop the journal’s concept of peer review, by inviting contributors of previous issues to recommend interesting artists from their regions. So far, more than 160 artists and artist collectives from 77 countries have participated in PRŌTOCOLLUM. Being able to tap into the knowledge and expertise of this diverse community puts PRŌTOCOLLUM in a unique position as a platform for non-Western contemporary visual art.

PRŌTOCOLLUM’s motto ‘Global Perspectives on Visual Vocabulary’ epitomizes its intention to present a visual arts exhibition in the framework of an art journal, letting the visual flow determine the sequence of the artists’ contributions.

09/05/2016

The second issue of PRŌTOCOLLUM art journal (www.protocollum.org), the international survey of contemporary non-Western visual art, art narratives and art history, was presented during an international launch event that was held in Dakar, Senegal, on May 8th in connection with the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary Art. As a number of artists who contributed to PRŌTOCOLLUM have also participated in the Dakar Biennale, it was important for us to use this opportunity and arrange a lunch event for PRŌTOCOLLUM here in Dakar. Inspirational conversations and interesting exchanges took place among our guests, not only about the various exhibitions and talks of the Biennale, but also about the topics and issues that are the focus points of our project and research like the growing role of non-Western contemporary art in the international art discourse and how to further strengthen the global awareness of contemporary art from regions like Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe.

PRŌTOCOLLUM art journal convenes the relevant voices from diverse countries and regions around the world by directly connecting to the artists in their home regions. Counteracting the opinion-shaping influence of art institutions in Europe or North America, PRŌTOCOLLUM provides a forum for the ideas, perspectives, visions and perceptions of artists and art scenes located outside of the Western hemisphere, striving to achieve a multi-faceted and balanced picture of contemporary global artistic practice, art narratives and art history. The inaugural issue of PRŌTOCOLLUM was launched in November 2014, with contributions from 72 visual artists and art collectives from 54 countries. The second issue for 2015/16 that took centre stage during the lunch event in Dakar contains contributions by 92 visual artists and artist collectives from 53 countries.

Many thanks to all of you who joined us for PRŌTOCOLLUM's event in Dakar! I am especially proud that my home continent Africa has hosted both such a successful Biennale for Contemporary Art and our meeting with dedicated talks and motivating discussions among a very interesting circle of artists, art professionals and art scholars.

92 visual artists and art collectives from 53 countries: PRŌTOCOLLUM 2015/16 now available

Berlin-based DICKERSBACH KUNSTVERLAG presents the second issue of PRŌTOCOLLUM, an annually published artists’ journal dedicated to non-Western contemporary visual artists, art narratives and art history. Honouring its motto Global Perspectives on Visual Vocabulary, PRŌTOCOLLUM’s issue for 2015/16 features contributions by 92 visual artists and art collectives from 53 countries across Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia.

PRŌTOCOLLUM dedicates itself to the participating artists’ thoughts, visions and ideas, and offers its readership an unfiltered and unmediated encounter with contemporary global artistic practice. The artists independently select the content they would like to have published in their respective sections and are free to determine their contributions and the way in which they would like to communicate with the journal’s readers, including their language of preference. PRŌTOCOLLUM does not want to reflect what art experts, critics and curators think. The concept follows a strict philosophy of artistic autonomy over editorial authority, with no adverts and no editorial or curatorial interference.

For 2015/16 PRŌTOCOLLUM has invited a selection of artists from the inaugural issue to propose contributors, thus ensuring that the perspectives of local art scenes are duly represented. Featuring visual artists, art collectives and artistic practices across a wide range of media on more than 350 pages, the journal’s 2nd issue once more provides unique access to truly global contemporary art scenes.

PRŌTOCOLLUM can be ordered online via www.protocollum.org and the publisher’s DICKERSBACH KUNSTVERLAG website www.dickersbach.net

If you are in Hamburg today, please join us for a symposium on the role of art in intercultural communication:

"Was ist ein Dialog auf Augenhöhe? - Die Rolle der Kunst im interkulturellen Austausch".

Alexander Koch, Frank Alva Buecheler, Mallence Bart-Williams and Safia Dickersbach will be discussing with moderator Kolja Reichert.

It is starting today at 3 pm at Millerntor-Stadion auf St. Pauli (Haupttribüne und Südkurve), Harald-Stender-Platz 1, 20359 Hamburg.
