Since 2016, One Instrument has been consistently releasing annual compilations featuring compositions created by various artists. "Year 2024" marks the 8th installment in this series. This yearly celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on the label's concept and its origins.

In 2016, Aimée Portioli, known as Grand River, initiated One Instrument as a record label dedicated to showcasing sound experiments from diverse artists. The unique twist was that each artist was challenged and constrained to produce their compositions using just a single instrument of their choice.

Aimée Portioli explains that One Instrument began as a personal experiment. Shehad been working with a Korg MS-20 (the 1978 version) borrowed from a friend foran extended period. During this time, she realized that she frequently switched between various instruments while composing. It was then that she made the decision to commit to a single instrument for an entire composition, selecting the MS-20 for this purpose. This deliberate limitation proved to be incredibly beneficial, as it forced musicians to place constraints on their composition process. Simultaneously, it led to a deeper exploration of the chosen instruments, revealing that they deserved more time and patience for study and experimentation.

Quasar 554 is the project of producer Paolo Alberto Lodde, also known as Dusty Kid. Under this moniker, he delves into experimental and electronic music. For the One Instrument label, he crafted an EP showcasing his versatility, using exclusively the Roland Jupiter-6. Often overshadowed by its pricier predecessor, the Jupiter-8, and frequently criticized for its cold and thin sound, the Jupiter-6 reveals its strengths and capabilities in this release. The EP embarks on a cosmic journey reminiscent of the late 80s Berlin School. The unit Lodde used has been upgraded with the Europa mod (by Synthcom) and sequenced in Logic Pro.

Exploration SX - 240 by Kenneth Roberts is available on Bandcamp and via our distributor.

Kenneth's release is a sonic journey that melds the diverse styles from his past works into a captivating amalgamation. Drawing inspiration from the cosmic sounds of late 1960s through 1970s synthesizer space music, he crafts a collection of tracks that effortlessly blend intricate contrapuntal melodies with gritty grunge rock riffs.

Kenneth Roberts is a classically trained composer and multi-instrumental performer from the northwestern United States.
“Exploration SX-240” was recorded with the increasingly rare 1984-released
polyphonic Kawai SX-240 synthesizer.
This release incorporates a conglomeration of styles from Kenneth’s previous
releases and professional works.
With an intentional nod to late 1960s through 1970s synthesizer space music, he has created a group of tracks that are as comfortable seamlessly weaving intricate contrapuntal lines, as laying down hard-hitting grunge rock riffs.
Less commonly used key signatures are featured in many of the tracks, implemented in a masterful way that adds intrigue, yet flies under the radar of most listeners.
The Kawai SX-240 is pushed to its absolute limits with this immersive collection of pieces.
This EP marks a distinctly different addition to the rest of Kenneth’s discography, as well as a markedly unique release within the One Instrument’s catalog.

Go East by Brueder Selke is available on Bandcamp and via our distributor.

'Go East' marks a significant milestone in the long-term collaboration of Brueder Selke, two brothers who grew up on the socialist side of the Berlin Wall. The tracks are driven by the essential components of a restored Piano-Strings achine, along with two electronic organs named Sandy and the ET6-1, and a E-Piano, all manufactured by Vermona in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
