Nigeria exported $2.57bn worth of crude oil to the US between January and August 2025, making it America’s largest African supplier by far. New US Census Bureau data shows Nigeria provided 55% of all African crude imported by the US in that period—33.23 million barrels out of a total 60.75 million barrels. No other African nation came close, with Nigeria’s shipments far ahead of Angola, Libya, Ghana, and others. In effect, more than one in every two barrels of African crude reaching US ports came from Nigeria

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has fired his powerful chief of staff and top negotiator, Andriy Yermak, after investigators raided Yermak’s home in a major corruption probe. The dismissal comes as Ukraine faces a renewed Russian offensive and a controversial US peace plan viewed as favoring Moscow. Yermak is accused of involvement in a $100-million energy-sector kickback scheme, sparking public anger amid nationwide blackouts from Russian strikes. Yermak, long viewed as Ukraine’s second-most powerful and most divisive figure, was known for centralizing authority and sidelining critics. He and Zelenskyy were notably close, often appearing together at official events, with media reporting they even shared living quarters in the presidential bunker.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan says what happened in Guinea-Bissau was not a real coup but a “ceremonial coup.” Jonathan, who led an election observation mission, said it was strange that President Umaro Sissoco Embalo announced the “coup” himself and continued speaking freely to the media, claiming he had been arrested. He said the election was peaceful and results were ready before the disruption, urging ECOWAS and the African Union to release the official results. His comments suggest Embalo may have lost and used the military to block the announcement. Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio announced on X that the military has released Embalo and that he has taken refuge in Senegal.

Senegal’s Prime Minister has dismissed reports of a coup attempt in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a "fabrication." He accused President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of using the military to hold onto power after losing the first round of elections. On Thursday, Guinea-Bissau’s military installed Major-General Horta Inta-a as transitional president, removing civilian authorities before official results from the weekend’s presidential and legislative elections could be announced. "What happened in Guinea-Bissau was a sham. We want the electoral process to continue," said Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko during a parliamentary session. "The [electoral] commission must be allowed to declare the winner." Embalo has since arrived in Senegal after being released by military forces. Reports allege he ordered security forces to detain opposition leaders and create chaos to justify a state of emergency. The situation has raised concerns about regional instability, with ECOWAS closely monitoring developments.
