News from AMIA in Baltimore

At this year’s AMIA Conference in Baltimore, Tom Lorenz (Managing Partner, Cube-Tec) shared insights into one of Europe’s most ambitious video preservation projects: the migration of 550,000 hours of broadcast material for the National Library of Norway.

All recordings originate from legally required broadcasts of NRK and are now being transferred into the Library’s long-term digital archive. The workflow behind it: a fully quality-controlled QUADRIGA•Video setup with 16 broadcast VTRs, capable of migrating up to 90 hours per day. The system has been running successfully in full production for two years, supported by a tailor-made QC workflow developed specifically for this project.

Last week, the community of media archives professionals gathered in Rome for the FIAT/IFTA World Conference in the heart of the Cinecittà film studio complex. Enjoy a few impressions captured there by Jörg Houpert (Head of Technology, Cube-Tec International).

Paolo Benanti's keynote speech on technology ethics provided food for thought. I was particularly impressed by the presentation by Roberto Borotallo and Giuliano Donnini on the RAI News Reel preservation project. It was only fitting, in my opinion, that the project was named the winner of the 2025 Achievement Award for Excellence in Media Preservation. And this was entirely without my involvement, as I had once again abstained from voting this year as a member of the FIAT/IFTA Preservation and Migration Commission.

Every year on 27 October, audiovisual archives around the globe celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. It is the day on which we consciously honour the audiovisual recordings that document our shared history and cultural identity. When properly contextualised, these treasures are trustworthy windows into our past.

However, this irreplaceable heritage is under serious threat. The fragility of analogue media such as film reels, video and audio tapes, discs and cylinders, combined with hazards such as vinegar and sticky shed syndrome, colour fading, and mechanical wear, means that much of our audiovisual heritage is at risk of being lost forever.

Analogue films are celebrating their 130th anniversary this year. For 20 years, UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage has commemorated this groundbreaking invention, which has significantly changed and shaped our image of the past.

At Cube-Tec, we have been passionately committed to preserving audiovisual heritage for 30 years. With QUADRIGA technology, we offer unique solutions for archives. Thanks to advanced technology, it is now much more efficient and therefore more cost-effective to inspect and digitise large collections using sophisticated quality control.

Today we celebrate Silent Movie Day!!!

It is estimated that between 80 and 90 percent of all silent films worldwide are lost forever.

Every reel that survives is a fragile time capsule. Every scratch, crack, or missing frame is a reminder of how easily history fades.

At Cube-Tec, we have made it our mission to preserve what still exists. INSPECTIONscan enables the digitisation of film reels, even from large collections that have been untouched for decades.

Thank to this, there is a good chance that you will be able to rediscover and preserve precious gems were considered lost.

In silent films there are no voices, but their stories should always be heard and preserved.
