NEW RELEASE! Edu Haubensak - SEQUOIA I – IV (2019–2024) for six concert grand pianos

At the same time, Sequoia stands as a homage to Ivan Wyschnegradsky. In 1956, Wyschnegradsky composed Arc-en-ciel for six pianos tuned a twelfth tone apart, with the aim of rendering in sound the innumerable gradations of color within a rainbow. Edu Haubensak, who at the end of the work quotes his 1979 piano piece Schwarz Weiss, thereby revealing the nucleus of Sequoia, thus brings several circles to a close. He not only connects his own past with the present, but also allows a monumental work to resound—one that is firmly rooted in the earth and reaches far into the heights, touching, with the tree tops, Wyschnegradsky’s rainbow. (Rudolf Amstutz)

In reference to “Holzsplitter” (Wood Splinters), the composition “Slivers,” like the entire album, is a tribute to the founders of the venue, Hildegard and Walter Schär, who opened Bau 4 in their family-run timber company as a venue for creative music concerts. In 2025 after 20 years of music curation, they handed it over to the next generation. For this farewell concert Hemingway developed a site-specific project. As in the quartet piece “Bau 4 Assembly” for which he adopted wood scraps from the company's cutting machine which the ensemble uses here as an additional sound source: rubbing and clattering. Depicted in his score as flying parts in space, fragments of a larger whole, like the sounds formed by the ensemble itself. ( Maxi Broecking )

NEW RELEASE! Densities - for 12 trombones & percussion by Matthias Muche BONECRUSHER

Matthias Muche - trombone, composition, artistic leader
Matthias Müller - trombone, composition
Adrian Prost - trombone
Carlotta Armbruster - trombone .ar

Jeb Bishop - trombone
Maria Trautmann - trombone
Matthias Schuller - trombone

Moritz Anthes - trombone
Moritz Wesp - trombone
Till Künkler - trombone
Etienne Nillesen - snare drums

This music pulls me in like a vacuum cleaner: chords crackle, creak and howl, clouds of sound vibrate eerily, and in the midst of it all, the finest nuances reveal themselves. The ensemble BONECRUSHER — founded in 2020 by Cologne-based trombonist and composer Matthias Muche — showcases its latest developments in four compositions. The musicians create their own sound universes, illuminate them with self-developed sounds and devote themselves to the possibilities of the trombone with an obsession for detail. (Sophie Emilie Beha )

PRODUCTION: mixed by Nanni Johansson ; Mastering by Michael Brändli , Hardstudios AG; Liner notes by Sophie Emilie Beha; Graphic concept by fuhrer vienna ; Produced by Matthias Muche; Associate producer: Christian C. Dalucas Dalucas ; Executive producers: Melanie Imhof , Marco von Orelli

NEW RELEASE! John Cage - Two2 (1989) for 2 Pianos

https://now-ezz-thetics.bandcamp.com/album/john-cage-two2-1989-for-2-pianos

Judith Wegmann - piano
Marlies Debacker - piano .debacker
John Cage - composition

Cage often said that he preferred to listen to live performances than to recordings. I suspect he would have been delighted with this performance of Two2, recorded in concert in Kunsthaus Zug in Switzerland on 17th May 2024. Marlies Debacker and Judith Wegmann are regular partners in both improvised and composed music and, as Judith Wegmann says, they play ‘without intention’, allowing their instruments ‘to merge into a single, unified sound body’, freeing themselves ‘to let the sounds simply be and listen to them’.(Christopher Fox)

NEW RELEASE! XOXO, Birds & Dogs

XOXO:
Christoph Gallio - soprano & altosaxophone
Raphael Loher - piano, fx .loher

Birds & Dogs:
Christoph Gallio - soprano & altosaxophone
Matthew Ostrowski - arp synthesizer, sampling
Alfred Zimmerlin - violoncello, fx

Gallio is making an important statement with this album, therefore a statement about beauty. Instead of saying "It's bu****it", free players could just say "It's not to my taste". That's the difference between admiring, and loving or liking. For instance, I admire Evan Parker's music, but can't say that | always love it. This may be true of much difficult art. It's not true of XOXO and birds and dogs - music to admire and to love. (Andy Hamilton)

Back Catalogue Title of the Week: Dialog by Sergio Armaroli & Evan Parker

https://now-ezz-thetics.bandcamp.com/album/sergio-armaroli-evan-parker-dialog

Sergio Armaroli - vibraphone, tracks1,3,5,7, 9 & 11.
Evan Parker - soprano saxophone, tracks 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10.

Dialog: Two Rooms One Vibraphone 1 to 6 & Five Interludes differs, however, from the classical Greek idea of dialectics, that of thesis-antithesis-synthesis, in one respect. There is thesis, from Armaroli, and antithesis, from Parker, but it is a third party, the listener, who provides the synthesis. And there will be as many syntheses, and as much diversity among them, as there are those of us tuning in. (Chris May)

Back Catalogue Title of the Week: Lotus Blossom

https://now-ezz-thetics.bandcamp.com/album/lotus-blossom

Alex Hendriksen - tenor saxophone
Fabian Gisler - double bass ._gisler
Paul Amereller - drums

To me, these guys sound as if they have a story to tell and enough confidence to believe that they can tell and retell the old stories in new and exciting ways. Hendriksen and Gisler have formed together on this kind of thing, but if it remains true in jazz that rhythm and the percussionist are at the heart of every new step forward, then Paul Amereller’s role in the trio is crucial. No one will mistake him for anything but a contemporary, but he plays in full knowledge of the history of the music and of his instrument. (Brian Morton)

Back Catalogue Title of the Week: STRG + X by

https://now-ezz-thetics.bandcamp.com/album/strg-x

Simon Lucaciu - piano
Florian Müller - double bass
Lukas Heckers - drums

The album's title is borrowed from computer language: STRG + X is the key combination for “cut to the clipboard” to be temporarily stored and pasted somewhere else at a later time. Perhaps the most important quality of this carefully thought-out yet anything but cerebral music: it is aware of its means and can twist and turn and rearrange them as it pleases, in which case improvised contexts create their own forms and play with original material in a fresh, new way. This is a creative process, for which merely playing back standard phrases is not enough nor does pure virtuosity suffice. (Ulrich Steinmetzger).

Decibel are a new music ensemble that focus on the integration of acoustic and electronic instruments in chamber music performance, founded in Western Australia in 2009. They are world leading interpreters of graphic notations and pioneer digital score formats for composition and performance.
