😗 Okay, so we have good news and bad news…

Let’s start with the bad news first, so we can get that off of our chest. 🙈

We just realised that we need an updated team photo. We expanded and don’t think it’s appropriate to pretend and photoshop the missing faces on here. Time to get that camera back out and !

The good news is - dramatic light and drum roll please - COTR HAS 400 FRIENDS!! 🎉

Excuse us, while we are dancing and screaming “holyguacamoly” and “cheers” and whatever else people say when they clash glasses of lemon water and spicy chai tea together. We are celebrating YOU! 💃🏽🕺🏻

How amazing is it, that 400 of you follow what COTR is up to?! 🙌🏼

🦄 Give us a second to reminisce:
This magazine was born in the chirping birds and blooming new season of spring 2018. Throughout the years, it had its ups and downs, with writers saying ciao by coming and going, from big and small articles that offered readers joyful discussions and teeth grinding debates, to working even harder to dip the upcoming COTR Issue in brighter magic than before.
Every story shared was the creation of someone's heartfelt emotions and insatiable desire to write it all down.

And we are beyond grateful and thankful that YOU care. That YOU stop for a second to read our posts (like this one), check our stories, click on our website, and read the COTR Issues. 😍

We don’t know if you know but…you actually are the reason why we have a magazine at .

Without readers and writers, there wouldn’t be a biannual magazine. So the fact that you care and take time out of your busy schedule to check us out, like and comment, or submit your work, means a lot.

Thanks! 💚

BTW: Please let us know in the comments or by direct message if there is anything you would like to read, see, or have that hasn't been in a previous issue. Currently working on the upcoming Winter Issue 22/23 - and we still have some space left for your wishes!

Let's deep-dive into: Why everyone is talking about COP27? 🌿

Today on 6 November governments come together at the COP27 UN climate change conference to allow faster international efforts to address the climate crisis.

Save this post to always come back to it later! 🙋🏼

🤔 What does COP27 mean?
stands for the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. That doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, so to keep it short and simple, calling it COP is easier for everyone.
Delegates from almost every nation on Earth gather annually at the climate COP to discuss global goals for tackling climate change, present their respective nations' plans for contributing to those goals, and report on their progress.

😲 Why is COP27 important?
The climate COP meets in a different city every year to demonstrate the importance of global coordination. The meeting this year will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18.
The conference in Egypt this year is focused entirely on implementation. The meeting in Glasgow the previous year set some ambitious new goals; now, nations must work hard to determine how they will achieve the goals they have set, including how to pay for climate action.

🙆🏽 A few topics we expect to see at COP27:

👉🏻 Adapting to climate change
👉🏻 “Loss and damage” funds for developing countries
👉🏻 Limit warming to 1.5 °C

🙂 What can I do to help address climate change?

🌱 Learn how to talk about climate change
🌱 Share your thoughts
🌱 Take action
🌱 Subscribe to climate-action newsletters
🌱 Read and learn more about it

What are your hopes and thoughts for COP27? Will you be in Egypt to attend it?

What is currently happening in Iran? 🇮🇷

Who is protesting for what? And how is Germany and the international community reacting to the movement? What is it actually all about?

This event is very close to our hearts, therefore we would like to raise awareness and ask you to join today's live talk in the Audimax. ✊

HSRW wants to create a space for personal contributions from the audience.

The event will last TODAY from 5 to 8 pm.

4 guests will share insights on the politics behind the happenings:

👉 Prof. Dr. Marziyeh Bakhshizadeh — “Systematic use of shame to suppress women’s voices”

👉 Prof. Dr. Jakob Lempp, Professor of Political Science Rhine Waal University — Iran as a totalitarian State?

👉 Zeynab Peyghambarzadeh, Iranian Activist and Researcher — “Claiming LGBTQIA+ visibility and belonging in the recent protests inside and outside Iran”

👉 Prof. Dr. Yaser Mirdamadi, Researcher in bio-medical ethics, the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London — “The "Woman, Life, Liberty" Movement in Iran and Religion”

Hope to see you later as well! 🤗

Happy Halloween, Pumpkins! 🎃

And yes, we could not resist to be weirdly cheesy by wishing you a spooktacular day.

While we made sure to get super creative with our spooky costumes already on the weekend (yes, we know you've been on that dance floor as well), we can't wait to get the horror on again today.

Any costume recommendations for us? 💀

In case you prefer to stay home and get all cozy and comfy, and you're not quite in the mood to study or finish that assignment (or read a COTR Issue - yes, you are forgiven, also in the name of )...we have a little Halloween Prompt for you to write:

🕯️ As I lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, it starts again - the slow creak of a rocking chair on the worn floorboards of the attic. The completely empty attic. 🕯️

Send us your short story at [email protected] and we put it up on the blog! 👏

Happy Halloween!

ARTICLE SPOTLIGHT II

Today’s spotlight sheds a light on Karim Abou Dargham’s appeal to the university and elected student bodies 🗣

This topic is now more important than ever since the yearly elections are coming up. The main issue Karim depicts is the shockingly low student voter turnout in the past elections. Only with a high voter turnout, students can be voiced democratically and change can take place.

The team of Catcher on the Rhein would like to encourage all of our readers to participate in the upcoming election and use their right to vote 📨

Last but not least, tomorrow is finally release day and we couldn’t be more excited 🤍😌

We are more than happy to announce that our new Summer Issue 2022 will be available on Friday, October 21st 🥳

In the light of current events, this issue’s theme is solidarity!

Our chief editor Samantha Dixon welcomes our readers and introduces the theme by saying: “We want to empower you with all you need to join the movement you so passionately want to be a part of. But most importantly, we want you to know that you are not alone in your struggles, no matter how painful or frightening they may be. In every way, whether big or small, we are and will always be here for you.”

As always the magazine can be read online on our website under https://de.catcherontherhein.org/ and in a printed version, which can be found on campus 😌

We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed creating it. See you on Friday!!

Your Catcher on the Rhein team 🤍✨
