In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the world premiere at the Romanischer Sommer (2001) in Cologne and on the occasion of composer Maria de Alvear’s 65th birthday, the work BAUM (2000) will be restaged with singer Cora Schmeiser and the percussion ensemble Drums Off Chaos. At the intersection of composition and improvisation, an extraordinary performance emerges that uses voice and rhythm to make “the essence of the tree” sonically tangible.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of David Cordier (1959–2025).

He was among the world’s greatest countertenors; a profoundly moving voice with unmatched mastery. Losing someone so close to Maria de Alvear is painful, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues.

We are incredible grateful that his beautiful voice is on our label. He was the soloist for “Doina” on Carola Bauckholt’s album “Crank and Cloud”, an excerpt of which you hear in this video.

Dear David, you will be profoundly missed.

“One day I met something strange on a stroll through the fields not far from the Hungarian border. The corn stood tall and waited to be harvested. The hot summerly east wind went through the fields, and suddenly I heard the hiss. Many had explained it to me but still I cannot tell the difference between wheat and rye. But I heard the difference. I think it was the first time that I actually heard something without an aesthetic context (like in a concert). Or was it the first time I heard in the first place? Something had happened. Before and after were separated categorically; they had nothing to do with each other anymore.” -Peter Ablinger
