Our active beekeeping year 2022 is coming to its end with the last feeding sessions. 🐝

Over the summer our colonies have produced about 70 kg of honey, and now we feed them with sugary water to ensure that they are strong and well-fed before the winter. ❄️❄️

In the next months, we beekeepers will still be busy with checking all the equipment and delivering our delicious honey to you. 🍯🍯

August is almost over and we continue to prepare our beehives for the upcoming winter ❄️❄️

An important step in the process is the varroa treatment. 🩹
The varroa mites attach to the workers bees, feed on their blood (hemolymph fluid), and reproduce in the larvae cells, causing brood malformations and weakening of the whole colony.
To slow their spread we treat our bees with 60% formic acid (a natural component of honey) using the Nassenheider evaporator, which will allow the acid to pe*****te the capped cells and kill the reproducing mites.
Later a second treatment will be carried out to ensure that this pest is kept in control 🐝💛

Today we'd like to introduce you to the youngest nucleus in our apiary 🐝

We created it almost two months ago and, although a bit slowly, the colony is now growing: the queen is laying eggs and the bees are working hard storing pollen and nectar in preparation for the upcoming winter.

We'll make sure to keep you posted with their journey and development 💛

P.s.: Can you spot the queen in the second pic? She has a green dot on her thorax. 🧐

Finally it’s summer!! ☀️☀️☀️ For us beekeepers it’s the main season and there is a loooot to do: We control the colonies if they are swarming, we form new colonies by introducing new queens and and and... Particularly this month our bees also looking for nectar 🌸🍯 Have you already seen some of our bees on the campus? 🙃🐝🌻

Im Juni haben wir Imker unsere Hauptarbeitszeit. Wir kontrollieren die Völker auf Schwarmstimmungen, vergrößern unsere Imkerei mit Ablegern und setzten neue Königinnen ein. In diesem Monat sind unsere Bienen auch besonders aktiv auf Nektarsuche. 🌻🌸🌼 Habt ihr schon eine unserer fleißigen Arbeiterinnen auf dem Zentralcampus der BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg gesehen? 🐝🐝🐝 Teilt gerne eure Momente mit den Bienen am Campus mit uns. 😁

Nun unser bilinguales Team Gunia & Alex 🤩:

🐝 Hello, I am Gunia (a beekeeper), from India. BTU bienen club gave me a chance to start my beekeeping journey with them. Back in India, I read about bee community but never gained any real practical experience. The only bitter part of beekeeping is the bee sting😅. In India people really don't have such real hobbies like beekeeping. On the contrary side, I was surprised to know that in Germany, people are so passionate about beekeeping. Even in club virtual meetings, bee keeping members are always excited, enthusiastic, passionate and I always enjoy their factual talks, it makes me more crazy to learn about bees. Sometimes when I sit with myself and think about bees, it always makes me happy that I have a bee hive to take care with my bee keeping partner Alexander. He is really helpful and always tries his best to shape my practical knowledge. Though I am learning from scratch but on the parallel side I am enjoying. Beekeeping is a beautiful hobby.

🐝 Hallo, ich bin Alexander. Ich studiere BWL und arbeite in Cottbus am Staatstheater. Schon sehr lange stand für mich fest, ich möchte Bienen halten. Mir hat bisher nur immer der geeignete Ort gefehlt. Da kam der Aufruf vom BTU Bienen e.V. genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt. Und zusätzlich zu den wundervollen Tieren habe ich hier ein buntes Team von unglaublich motivierten Leuten getroffen, mit denen es viel Spaß macht, zusammen die Welt der Bienen zu entdecken. Gemeinsam mit Gunia betreuen wir ein Vereinsvolk und versuchen herauszufinden, wie wir als Imker unseren Bienen am besten helfen können.
