"That final question sums up this memorable collection. At their core, these stories are about human beings trying to get other human beings to understand them, even when true understanding seems both impossible and dangerous."

Read Aviya Kushner's insightful and thorough review about "1945 and Other Stories".

New Release

We are happy to announce the publication of The True Way Out by Patrik Banga, translated by Isabel Stainsby.

The time: 1990s. The place: Prague’s Žižkov district.
A neighbourhood where hopelessness, drugs, alcohol, and fights are the everyday normal. Growing up in the local Roma community means you are destined to be just another misfit. However, the story of journalist Patrik Banga is strikingly different. It captures his life’s journey from the Roma quarter to becoming a journalist in the Czech media. In a raw and very open style it depicts the reality of a teenage boy who encounters rejection, criminalization, racism, and police brutality at an early age. And he’s looking for a real way out.

CEEOL PRESS CORDIALLY INVITES YOU TO

the book launch of

Mission Turan. Census of the Ancient Bulgarians

by Alek Popov

translated by Traci Speed

as part of the Literary Evening with a Glass of Wine
Vienna Bulgarian Studies Conference

5.30-7 PM / Thursday / December 5, 2024

Bulgarisches Kulturinstitut – Haus Wittgenstein, Parkgasse 18, 1030 Wien

Through a string of absurd and comical situations Popov transports the reader into an exotic world of adventure and love affairs, a world of songs, shamanic incantations and dances on the thin ice of big politics. But beneath the starry dome of the vast steppe, the eternal questions remain: who are we, where do we come from, why are we here?

We at CEEOL Press are deeply saddened by the passing of our author, Alek Popov. In the last few months we have been working with him and a team of talented publishing professionals (translator, editor, designer) to bring out Mission Turan in English. He was involved in every step and was very happy how the book was shaping up. We will make sure to bring his wonderful book to readers all around the world. Rest in peace, Alek!

Alek Popov, one of Bulgaria's top writers, died today aged 58. He was the most clear voice of a new generation of Bulgaria post-Communist writers who did not shy from teasing the opportunism, laziness, hypocrisy, lack of morals and fake patriotism of modern-day Bulgarians. He was widely popular, mostly for his novel Mission London, one of the best satirical works this country has seen in the 21st century. His works were translated into several languages, including English.

Alek was a great friend of Vagabond and contributed to this journal since its inception.

He is survived by his wife.

Find in the first comment a link with an intro into the work of Alek Popov by Vagabond's former editor Lucy Cooper and an excerpt from Mission London by Alek Popov, published in Vagabond, in 2007.
