**Mistake 1: Buying curtains only for the window and not the entire wall height**
Most of us have been measuring just the window frame, which instantly makes the room look shorter and cheaper.
Hang curtains close to the ceiling and choose floor-length panels.
**Mistake 2: Not planning curtains around German Rollers (Rollläden)**
In Germany, most apartments already have external roller shutters (the ones you pull down with a strap or button). You might think, “If I already have Rollers, I don’t need curtains.”
But relying only on rollers makes the room feel bare, cold, and unfinished and you miss the chance to make the space look cozy and expensive.
**Mistake 3: Choosing curtains that are too narrow (the “flat wall” effect)**
Choose curtains with 2–2.5× fullness of your window width. This adds volume and your room looks great.
**Mistake 4: Picking the wrong fabric finish — too thin or too shiny**
Cheap material can look plastic or overly reflective, which takes away the premium vibe you want.
Go for velvet-textured curtains that add depth and elegance.
They instantly make the room feel richer and more “expensive hotel” especially when paired with sheers.
**Mistake 5: Stopping the curtain panel at the radiator**
Germany has radiators EVERYWHERE. Many of us hang curtains above the radiator to “avoid blocking heat,” which ends up making the room look chopped and cluttered.
Let the curtains fall fully to the floor, even past the radiator.
**Mistake 6: Choosing and placing the wrong curtain rod**
Mount it higher to elongate your walls and make your room look bigger.
