Why Could Canada Become the EU’s First Associate Member 🇪🇺🇨🇦
The European Union is considering a new type of relationship with Canada that could bring the country closer to the bloc without making it a full EU member.
1 — Canada could become the EU’s first associate member.
2026 — the proposal was highlighted by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
27 — current number of EU member states.
€150 billion — the value of the EU’s SAFE defence financing instrument, in which Canada has become the first non-European participating country.
Trade, defence, energy, technology, and mobility — key areas where closer EU–Canada cooperation is being discussed.
Canada is already deepening its relationship with Europe, but associate membership would represent a new model for cooperation between the EU and a non-European country.
A potential new chapter in EU–Canada relations.

That model is now under pressure.

Energy became more expensive. China became not only a customer and supplier, but a powerful competitor. German industry faces higher costs, more regulation and weaker competitiveness.

Germany is still Europe’s largest economy. But the formula that made it an industrial powerhouse is changing.

The real question is not what Germany was.

What will Germany’s new economic model be?

🇨🇭⚡ SWITZERLAND BANS BURQAS & NIQABS IN PUBLIC — NATIONWIDE RULE NOW IN FORCE

Switzerland has officially implemented a nationwide ban on full-face coverings in public spaces, including garments such as the burqa and niqab.

Violations can result in fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs, although specific exceptions apply.

Supporters argue that visible faces are important for identification, public security and social interaction, and that common public rules should apply equally to everyone.

Critics say the measure could disproportionately affect Muslim women and raises concerns about religious freedom and personal choice.

Importantly, the law applies broadly to covering the face, rather than banning ordinary religious head coverings.

🇨🇭⚖️ Switzerland has drawn its line—but the wider debate between public rules and individual freedom continues.
