Dyani had fled his native South Africa in 1964 as a teenager, eventually relocated to Copenhagen, Denmark, and later Sweden, recorded numerous albums and played with internationally renowned contemporaries such as Chris McGregor, Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim), Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, David Murray, Mongezi Feza & Okay Temiz (Xaba) and many more, before his sudden passing in 1986 at the age of only 41 after a performance in West Berlin. He was a key figure of the anti-apartheid movement and member of the South African diaspora, who lived in exile and ultimately chronicled the movement in his artistic work, a powerful musical voice from abroad.
