WORDS ON SOUND
How Games Trained Us to Listen – Part I

What began with stereo has become a new kind of spatial literacy.
Games taught us to move through sound—and we carry that with us into museums, exhibitions, and cultural spaces.

With PIECE THREE, originally written for the “Listening to Climate Change” concert, we experimented with a spatialisation technique by involving the audience. By turning audience members’ cellphones into individual speakers, each listener became part of the orchestra.

Based on seating positions, audience members were each assigned a specific voice from the composition, making them an integral part of the performance.

With the concert LISTENING TO CLIMATE CHANGE, the Youth Orchestra Berlin performed a musical program to raise awareness about a more sustainable future. We collaborated and experimented with Landesmusikrat Berlin e.V. to integrate new technologies into a traditional concert setting. Alongside five classical pieces composed between 1737 and 2008, we created five additional compositions that together formed a narrative reflecting successive changes in climate—from the 1700s to the present day. To achieve this, our compositions incorporated climate data directly into the creative process.

How would you like to participate in concerts? Let us know in the comments.

Where does human creativity end and AI’s creativity begin?Travelling into the human imagination, an infinite space bound by our creativity. As we say in the video, “we hear AI creating music and envision the potential for new and vast collaborations...”

Originally, we performed this audio play in Vancouver live on the stage at TED24.

Propelled by an innate curiosity, we find ourselves exploring the evolving landscape of human-machine collaboration. As this relationship deepens, we begin to envision novel approaches to creativity that transcend traditional boundaries, imagining a future where human insight and artificial intelligence interweave to forge unprecedented creative pathways. As the lines between code and composition shift, we explore new ways to build musical structures, evoke emotions, and express ideas.

What do you think will come next?

What happens when sound enters a black hole?

Questioning this, we find ourselves in the vast emptiness of space. In such an abstract place, where there is no sound, we lean to the power of music for us to make sense of the relationship between sound and time.

Originally, we performed this audio play in Vancouver live on the stage at TED24.

In this chapter of our sonic journey, we reflect on the surreal nature of black holes and their event horizon. In our work under the same name, the music captures the moment when light and matter collapse beyond the point of no return. Through the sound of a voice that eventually meets the cosmic force of a black hole, it starts to distort and transform before dissolving into fragments and particles.

Above us, the sky is alive with song. Birds fill the air with intricate calls—so let’s take flight. In this acoustic ecosystem above us, we can start comprehending the story behind an intricate orchestration.

Originally, we performed this audio play in Vancouver live on the stage at TED24.The performance at TED24 was inspired by the sound scenography for an exhibition we did at Skagen’s Grey Lighthouse – Europe’s most vital site for bird migration. The sound scenography, titled CENTER FOR MIGRATORY BIRDS, unified a multidimensional approach to the exhibition with atmospheric and symphonic themes, multichannel recordings, and sound design for all of the interactive elements.

Beneath the surface, the earth is alive with sound. A world of movement, communication, and collaboration unfolds beneath our feet—too subtle for the human ear to detect. But with geophones and soil sensors, we make this hidden symphony audible.

Originally, we performed this audio play in Vancouver live on the stage at TED24.

This chapter is inspired by our work, SINGING SOIL, which was initially commissioned by Schemerlichtfestival. The installation creates an ever-evolving interplay between organic processes and human interventions. It aims to reflect on the delicate balance between nature and human presence in a way that emphasises the ecosystem's fragility.

In light of the upcoming elections in Germany, we’d like to share a sneak peek of our in-progress art installation BEHIND THE WORDS, which will be exhibited at THE DARK ROOMS HOTEL at the beginning of April.

As part of this project, we conducted an AI-based analysis of political speeches to reveal overall sentiment, emotional cues (joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust), potential hate speech, race-related stress, and factual reliability—inviting deeper conversation about the power of language.

Emotions are the key to persuasion. They play a powerful role in shaping our perception—by acknowledging their depth, we can begin to look beyond them.

Please note, although all speeches underwent the same analytical process, this method does not claim scientific validity and offers only a general tendency.

THE GRAPHS

Top Graph:
Capture emotional intensities over time, showing how joy or fear can fluctuate within a single speech.

Middle Graph:
Indicates the overall sentiment score, highlighting when the tone shifts from positive to negative.

Bottom Graph:
Tracks hate speech potential, race-related stress, and fact-checking accuracy.

KEY DEFINITIONS

Hate Speech:
Language targeting or demeaning a person or group based on attributes such as race, religion, or gender, highlighting potentially threatening or hostile phrases.

Race-Related Stress (RRS):
Gauges explicit or implicit references to racial tension or bias, without automatically assigning blame.

Fact-Checking Score:
A rough measure of how plausible or supported statements appear, rather than definitive proof of their correctness.

This part of the sonic journey begins in the depths of our oceans. Let’s deep-dive to a place where we hear different textures, animals and the natural forces that influence underwater life. The ocean is speaking to us…

Originally, we performed this audio play in Vancouver live on the main stage at TED24.

Our work for FJORD & BAELT, an open research lab in Denmark, inspires the chapter. For its permanent exhibition about the local marine ecosystems, we composed a soundscape from their recorded data, transforming an entire year into an acoustic time-lapse – where a day lasts 40 seconds and a month unfolds in 20 minutes. Listen to the ethereal sounds of harbour porpoises, the rhythm of shifting tides, and a symphony of an unchartered ocean through data about the moon's phases and sea pressure.

Sound shapes our world in ways numbers alone cannot tell. We transform complex data into emotional journeys through sound, creating symphonies that speak to both heart and mind. As we explore the intersection of art, science, and sound, join us on a journey through the universe.

How does a tweet evolve into an immersive, sensory experience? This question is brought to life in this interactive sound environment for Waltz Binaire’s Soap & Milk. The installation uses tweets to display microscopic droplets gliding across a digital canvas. Each droplet’s life cycle is a journey—forming, interacting, and dissolving in a vibrant, visual ecosystem.

For this, we designed an interactive soundscape that amplifies every droplet’s movement, reflecting their playful and unpredictable behaviour.

Similarly, in our work for Unhate (link in the comments below), we explored the role of social media in fostering mindfulness. While Unhate focused on transforming online hate speech into positive artistic expressions, Soap & Milk interprets tweets as bubbles, offering a simplified and organic perspective on digital communication.

Listen closely...

This reel takes you on a captivating journey through the evolution of an artificial intelligence learning to speak. What begins as raw chaos of frequencies gradually transforms into a structured voice, mirroring the unfolding of digital space itself.

I AM CODE IN A SPACE was showcased at the Reeperbahn Festival in 2020.
