Salzburg is the land of castles and palaces. Since 2025, a new historic site has joined the list of excursion destinations: Fort Kniepass in the Saalachtal valley. This adventure world combines history, adventure, and culinary delights—transforming a centuries-old border post into a place for explorers.

👉 The "Viper Slide," the longest and highest dry tube slide in the Alps, starts at the fortress and leads spectacularly down into the valley over a length of 150 meters and a height difference of 56 meters.
👉 Because the fortress was never the site of major military combat, it has remained largely well-preserved in its original state.
👉 An experiential trail invites visitors to reflect on the concept of "borders."

The cattle drive (Viehscheid) in Nesselwang

The health resort (Luftkurort) of Nesselwang sits like a sunny viewing terrace before the Allgäu and Tyrolean Alps. A cable car takes hikers and day-trippers up 1,500 meters to its local mountain, the Alpspitze. The undisputed highlight of the year is the autumn festival from September 15th to 19th with the traditional cattle drive, which is called Viehscheid in Nesselwang and is considered one of the finest due to its family-friendly character: At the end of summer, the Schumpen—as young cattle are called in the East Allgäu—return from the mountain pastures of the Alps back down into the valley. On the day of the Viehscheid, the animals are dressed up, and the finest one is decorated with a headpiece made of alpine flowers. As the lead cow (Kranzrind), it leads the festive procession, and the ringing of cowbells announces the Schumpen from afar. Down in the village, the cattle are "separated" (geschieden), meaning they are returned to their respective farmers. To celebrate the day, the men wear lederhosen with edelweiss suspenders and the women wear embroidered dirndls. Everyone celebrates together in the festival tent with brass band music, b**r, and pretzels (Brezn).

Fatal accident on the B299: Suspicion of an illegal street race

A car driver died in a collision between two high-powered cars and a truck. According to police, the 22-year-old and a second driver lost control of their vehicles. Investigators are now examining whether this was an illegal car race. A 22-year-old driver died on the B299 near Gebenbach in the Amberg-Sulzbach district. According to police statements, the 22-year-old American and a 30-year-old American crashed their cars into an oncoming semi-truck on the road in the morning. Police reported that the two were driving "high-powered BMWs." An expert has been brought in to clarify the exact sequence of events. Investigators are examining the suspicion of an illegal motor vehicle race, according to police, as certain indications point toward it. The cause may have been a combination of a wet road surface and excessive speed.
