Belfast. Ardglass. The Open.
Northern Ireland, Day 3.
Belfast is one of those cities where you’re never quite sure if things are being torn down or built up.
Victorian facades next to lost places, lovingly run cafés tucked between concrete blocks that feel like nobody gave them a second thought.
But that’s exactly what makes it interesting. It’s not a museum. It’s not pretending. It’s just full of edges.
Or, to put it differently:
Victorian architect meets IKEA stockroom, meets Banksy intern, meets mural designers with opinions.
All side by side. And somehow, it works.
And: the politest people!
Yesterday:
A course that’s not really hidden anymore – but still feels like a discovery. Right on the coast, full of wild ups and downs, blind shots, and some truly super remarkable holes you won’t forget.
The first two holes? Not unfair. Just bold. They stay with you. Not on the scorecard – but in your memory.
Ardglass was founded in 1896 and has the oldest clubhouse in the world - from 1405.
The pro shop? Probably the highest revenue per square metre in golf. Feels like five square metres total – but easily sees hundreds of visitors a day. And the merch? Pretty great.
The rental clubs: top notch. Titleist - almost brand new. With two sleeves of logo balls. You'll need them...
And the atmosphere?
A starter who looks like he picked up a club when Seve was still in school. Friendly, dry, seafaring.
The clubhouse feels like a mix of coastguard station and old pub – complete with our discovery of the day: Guinness 0.0. Alcohol-free, ice cold, unexpectedly good.
The course itself?
Absolutely scenic. Beautifully perched above the fishing village, with views of boats, trawlers, the open water.
It’s wide, but not forgiving. The Irish guys we played with called it an easy course.
But miss in the wrong place, and you’re not searching – you’re saying goodbye.
With flights going out every eight minutes, there’s pressure.
We played just under five hours – and it didn’t feel too long. It was tight, yes. But doable. And more than anything: memorable.
Today: our 2nd day at
Big names. Big pairings.
We’ll keep you posted.
